  Clash of Cultures Questioning

1.  Using the sources contributed to the shared google spreadsheet of primary documents, decide on a question you would like to explore related to Manifest Destiny and the impact on the Native American people as a result.

2.  Scan the list of sources, identify 5 that you would like to analyze as they relate to answering your chosen question.  Choose as least one visual source (map, poster, photograph, cartoon)

3.  Register for an account with thinglink.com and scoop.it.

4.  Using thinglink, analyze one of your visual sources.  Drop tags on the image to analyze the information.  When you are done editing tags, do "View Image"

5.  Log in to your scoop.it account.  Install the bookmarklet for adding links.  When you create your page, title it with the question you are answering.  Then add in your thinglink image and 4 additional primary document sources.  The scoop.it should include writing that analyzes the source.

Goal is for you to utilize a new way of presenting information, that is shared, and interactive - while investigating the clash of cultures that transpired when the colonists and American citizens started pushing West.

Matt Ferry - Immigration Visualization Project

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

    What surprised me most about the information was the laws created against Chinese immigrants and many other immigrants, locking down how many of them are allowed to come into our country. 

  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

    I think immigration will go down, seeing the current situation our economy and government is in. It's very discouraging to come to a country where we're on the verge of an economic crisis, if we aren't already in one. My prediction is that we'll slowly begin to get less immigrants in the next two decades. 

  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.

    Originally, we were going to create ours in a Keynote, but that didn't work. Cheyenne suggested using smiley faces and frown faces, which me and Justin though were just silly, but then we gave it a shot and we're proud with our final results. It's a set of smiley and frowny faces, the smiley faces show a year where immigration increased, while the frowny faces show went it decreased. 

  • What parts of group work were challenging?

    Just helping Cheyenne out, because neither I nor Justin are at all experienced with using Photoshop. 


  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

    I'd probably want to do something like a video. I think I'd have a lot of fun making a video.

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set? When there were major ups or downs in the immigration is was usually do to things we learned in school. What was surprising was some of the reasons for slight changes.

  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades. To keep a stable immigration trend there would be a need for no war or depressions, but also no extreme changes in other ways. So instead of a push and/or pull it would be still and un-moving

  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information. After viewing multiple choices our group found prezi the most interesting and more of a fun way to piece the project together.

  • What parts of group work were challenging? Having all of our work done, splitting them up evenly, and sharing thing with others when necessary.

  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over? I would have added more pictured and videos, but I think that as a group the project was an over-all completion and a piece of work to be proud about.
