  Clash of Cultures Questioning

Posted by Diana Laufenberg in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 12:39 pm
1.  Using the sources contributed to the shared google spreadsheet of primary documents, decide on a question you would like to explore related to Manifest Destiny and the impact on the Native American people as a result.

2.  Scan the list of sources, identify 5 that you would like to analyze as they relate to answering your chosen question.  Choose as least one visual source (map, poster, photograph, cartoon)

3.  Register for an account with thinglink.com and scoop.it.

4.  Using thinglink, analyze one of your visual sources.  Drop tags on the image to analyze the information.  When you are done editing tags, do "View Image"

5.  Log in to your scoop.it account.  Install the bookmarklet for adding links.  When you create your page, title it with the question you are answering.  Then add in your thinglink image and 4 additional primary document sources.  The scoop.it should include writing that analyzes the source.

Goal is for you to utilize a new way of presenting information, that is shared, and interactive - while investigating the clash of cultures that transpired when the colonists and American citizens started pushing West.

Business Unit Project

  • I chose this type of presentation because it looks the most attractive and meaningful, given the concepts utilized. It seems that when data is expressed to an audience, the fewer the amount of words used, the better. Thus, a single slide was ideal.
  • Individual change is when you set your mind to something. Systemic change is when a group of people set their minds to a universal idea.
  • What is "business" like in other countries?

Reflection

Manna and I chose to create a VoiceThread because it was a different tool that allowed for voice overs and such which stood out to us. The VoiceThread explains our response to the 11th grade question.

My presentation that I chose to do is a video with a verbal explanation of how individual and systemic change occurs.

My Video answers the questions of how exactly individuals bring about change and for what purpose. My video also looks how how systemic change occurs and why it does.

Change on Prezi

1. Explain your choice of presentation format.

We used a Prezi because it was an interactive way to answer the question and support it with facts from our business unit. A Prezi is very interesting since your viewer is involved in your presentation and it takes you step by step through the presentation. It was also a an easy way to include our cartoons in our presentation.

 2. Two sentences about your answer to the essential question.

Change is usually caused by the actions of an individual. One person can influence a thousand more to support their cause. Both President Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt have made an impact on American society through individual change. Not only did they create change, they also maintained the change they created throughout their presidency.

3. What questions do you sill have about business in America?

How many of President Roosevelt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt's policies are still in place today? What are some of the acts that congress can pass to further improve regulation in the business sector?

Imani Johnson's Business Unit Reflection

1. Symone and I decided to do a wordle because it seemed like it was better to use adjectives in order to define a successful change creating individual

2. My answer to the EQ we chose is that the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is to go against all odds and defend the plan in the success to keep his reform. Also to keep with his change and making sure people stick by it.

3.  My question that I still have about business in America is when has a plan of change failed and why?

1.Imani and I decided to create a Wordle because it seemed like a better way to display the words we thought were connected with the essential question.
2.The person of focus or the individual in this case is the president. His role or job is to take up the responsibility is to change things in order to help and satisfy the people of America.
3. Would it be simpler to have a more complex business plan/policy or a simple plan?

Keiasha Lumpkins

What I decided to create was a wordle/picture collage of different words and phrases about Theodore Roosevelt. Also I wanted the different cartoons that we looked over  in class about the Anti-Trust law, and different monopolies. I did this type of format because I didn't want to make something big that cold confused people but each word describes Teddy and what he has done. I also used the quote "All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward." - Ellen Glasgow. I used this because it relates to the essential questions that we have to answer.

Nothing will get accomplished unless someone steps up and take charge. Also that causes change. The essential questions are all about change. Different systems can't change if no one wants it to change. It takes a leader to take the courage to put change forward for the future. When one individual takes action in to changing something, then other individuals follow after. A good example would be Teddy and Obama. A lot of people compare Obama at times to Teddy because change is happening. A lot of policies are changing because of Obama. Obama wanted to take charge and see what past Presidents agendas were. It seems as though he picked Teddy as one of them. Teddy Roosevelt changes inspired Obama to make more changes.

Some questions that I have are, what other presidents wanted to follow in Teddy Roosevelt place? Or at least be as successful as Teddy?

Explain your choice of presentation format:

-We chose VoiceThread as our method of presentation because it allowed us to be more personal with our learning by adding voice comments to the presentation. This medium was also new to us, and we thought that it might be an interesting way of answering the Essential Question.

Answer your chosen Essential Question in two sentences:

Essential Question: What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

-The role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is either to disrupt the current flow of events with intent to create sustainable change, or continue with the flow so that establish change can be maintained. Change can not continue to exist and benefit the whole if these two roles are not fulfilled at some point in time.

What questions do you still have about business in America?
-Because there evidence has supported a cycle of business in America, does that signify that  adapted versions of past events lie in the future of America?
