  Clash of Cultures Questioning

Posted by Diana Laufenberg in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 12:39 pm
1.  Using the sources contributed to the shared google spreadsheet of primary documents, decide on a question you would like to explore related to Manifest Destiny and the impact on the Native American people as a result.

2.  Scan the list of sources, identify 5 that you would like to analyze as they relate to answering your chosen question.  Choose as least one visual source (map, poster, photograph, cartoon)

3.  Register for an account with thinglink.com and scoop.it.

4.  Using thinglink, analyze one of your visual sources.  Drop tags on the image to analyze the information.  When you are done editing tags, do "View Image"

5.  Log in to your scoop.it account.  Install the bookmarklet for adding links.  When you create your page, title it with the question you are answering.  Then add in your thinglink image and 4 additional primary document sources.  The scoop.it should include writing that analyzes the source.

Goal is for you to utilize a new way of presenting information, that is shared, and interactive - while investigating the clash of cultures that transpired when the colonists and American citizens started pushing West.

Fat cats and poor, rags versus rich,

Been playing too long its causing a glitch,

The Monopolizing monopolies the fat cats who rule

They're taxing the poor and acting far too cruel

The change in America isn't change for the better

Mother Liberty is dying and I got a question will we let her?

This monopoly is a game I ask what piece are you

The fat cats who collect or the players without a clue

We're suffering for their choices, but they're deaf when we holler

Passing GO too many times and collecting our 200 dollars

Rockefeller and Carnegie the ingredients destroying our system

The ones with money and greed but no sense of wisdom

Teddy shot them down on an economical hunt

Solving many problems on a diplomatic front

Stopping the railroad, the coal, the game altogether

Busting the trusts and making life better

The monopolies were dead, but the game still went on

Sucking Americas work and hope until it was all gone

The stock market crashed, the system had faded

Until FDR came along took the system and upgraded

The WPA, and Social Security Act

Brought the economy higher than before and that's a fact

Making jobs for the unemployed was from the Civil Works Administration

Healing the scars one by one of a broken Nation

Explain your choice of Presentation Format:

I chose to present with a poem, because I feel that writing poetry would better show my understanding of the topic rather then creating a powerpoint.

Two sentences about your answer to the essential question.
Systematic change is and can be created by anybody with the will power. However not everybody will benefit from it.

What questions do you sill have about business in America?
Is there anyway that business could be successful for everybody?

What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

As Presidents of our nation, both President Obama and President Franklin D. Roosevelt have created and sustained change. In fact they were elected for that exact reason. It not only the President's job to create laws and bill to make life better for the American people, but also to make sure it lasts. In many cases this was done by creating new acts that served the needs of America. But the difficult part of this question is not the creating but the sustaining. How do you make a difference that will last? Both of these men have done this. They made valuable change last by giving the bills and acts with a stable base. This base consisted of what the people wanted and needed. These men succeed not only because they made change but because they gave the people what they want and after that they didn't want anymore change. That is the role of an individual in creating and sustaining change.

What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change ?

Over the years Obama has caused tremendous change in our country. Even though people have doubted him since the get go he has come a very long way and has been able to mantain it. He is an example of an individual who is able to create change and sustain it. He gave people HOPE, caused CHANGE, and made PROGRESS.

Business Unit Reflection- Trosario- Earth

Explain your choice of Presentation Format:
I chose power point because it was easier to present and I would have to send a lot of time learning how to use t and could use my time for the actual presentation.

Two sentences of you answer to the questions:

My answer was that the individual during certain decades had the main say in bills that were passed, but now it takes many other steps to get the idea of change to be considered.

What questions do you still have about Business in America?

I would like to know what the process of change is like in other countries and why our system of change was ratified.

Due to issues with uploading a power point I have used the voice overs and images and created a iMovie instead.

Business in America Reflection

Posted by Cheyenne Pagan in American History - Laufenberg on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 4:48 am

They call it your responsibility, an obligation, a calling. They surround you with descriptions and depictions of this dream of red, white and blues failing to mention this alternate dimension, this place , this time where only the lies are fed to you free and living is a business breathing is paid for nothing is what it seems and being on the inside doesn't give any more information than what they provide and with all the power in the world and still they are cowards they hide through loop holes and back door deals. And now its your responsibility, an obligation, a calling to change what you know is wrong and sir they'll call you a bigger hero than hercules strength does not come in hundreds of men and their muscles but instead they're voices being heard. See that is the key to creating sustaining maintaining a beautiful day of new. Just listen for a second and promises were never meant to be broken and a wise man once "Behind the ostensible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people."

1. I chose a poem format because out of all the things I had learned about Theodore Roosevelt the one thing that stood out to me was how personal he took what he did and although he took the countries problems to heart this unit showed the complete opposite of that. I thought that it would resemble the business unit in the sense that it does in fact contradict business but completely resembles Theodore Roosevelt and all he stood for. To me, it was just a personal touch. However, apart from the sentimental points, I chose to do a poem because it gave me the ability to weave in my sources in a unique way for example, a cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt feeding his cat "Trusty" a bowl of "Protection" inspired the line "only the lies are fed to you free" whereas the more famous cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt as baby Hercules inspired the line "they'll call you a bigger hero than hercules". Although those are the main direct links to my sources the overall poem was inspired by a general overview of the information I had learned and the other sources I collected.

2. If the role of people in a democracy is to appoint a leader for change then the role of that individual is to listen and expand on their voices. To sustain this change not only does this individual need to rise to their role but the democracy as a whole needs to stand as one.

3.How does the business in America affect those in power?

What causes systemic and individual change?

Posted by Malik Tlili in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Systemic change is something that is inevitable. There are many details that pertain to systemic change, but they will change regardless. It takes an individual to set a trend to cause either positive or negative change. In this scenario, we focused on individuals who attempted to lead a systemic change. For example, during the time that Teddy Roosevelt was in office, he wanted to stop the overwhelming amount of monopolies. These monopolies were created by large companies and trusts. These companies used devilish ways to get money. They would force their buyers into purchasing something they did not want in order to get something they did want. In our visual presentation, we focused on Barack Obama and Theodore Roosevelt. They both wanted to create change in the economy and government. Theodore wanted to spread money around rather than companies hogging hard earned money from citizens. Barack Obama is trying to balance out the percentage comparison of high class to low class citizens. Initially, the gap between rich and poor in America is not only devastating but continually increasing. Obama is an individual wanting to create systemic change.

1. Explain your choice of presentation format.

Katherine and i chose to use a poster format for it is visually appealing as well as informative. we decided to leave a lot of words out and compare the repeating events of history through 2 quotes. One from our present day president, Barack Obama, as well as a quote from a more historic president, Theodore Roosevelt. Both of these individuals were in the process of creating systemic change involving the nation's economy.

2. Two sentences about your answer to the essential question.

Systemic Change is a process that can be voiced through one individual, but the numbers behind the individual must be a majority. Systemic change is usually for the benefit for the majority's needs.

3. What questions do you sill have about business in America?

The point of business is to do what you can to make the business successful, so why cant these companies use these methods of earning money?

1. Explain your choice of presentation format.
Malik and I chose to do a poster because we felt that posters are visual and if this were to be posted, many people would be able to see the points that we were trying to make. We also liked the idea of making it with our hands instead of over the computer.

 2. Two sentences about your answer to the essential question.

Systemic change is when a whole system changes in a big way. Typically, these changes begin with one individual wanting to change a problem with a system.

3. What questions do you sill have about business in America?
What systems could be developed to prevent monopolies and inflation of certain businesses.

J.Pullins, What is Change?: The Butterfly Effect

Posted by Anonymous in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Preview of “J.Pullins, ChangePresidentialPoster”
The essential question I chose to base my piece off of was:

"What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?"

The inevitability of change is astounding. I believe that we each have our own roles in the environments, societies, and world around us, and that our every decision makes a both significant and small. I believe that the smallest decisions can lead to the greatest changes in our world.

The butterfly effect is the belief that the smallest events can lead to the greatest changes. I believe this correlates to the business unit, as well as the Presidents of the US and essential questions, because the role that each individual plays in society affects it in some way. We all create the norms and systems in which we abide by, and the influence that we hold is greater than we often realize.

The piece I've uploaded tries to represent this by displaying three U.S. presidents, and symbolized their effects on society with the path of the butterfly.
