U2 #8 Reflection- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 11:36 am

In Tech class, We watched a video based on the danger of the internet. In my opinion, the most memorable event that happened in the film was when Ryan committed suicide. This was memorable because, it goes back to our Cyberbullying session a few weeks ago.

It is important for us teens to watch this film because, it shows us what could happen to both our online and personal life. It shows that we could be talking to older men/women when their profile picture is a picture of a 14 years old girl.

I would keep my future family safe by making strict rules for online uses. The reason why you should have a talk with your family is because you need to tell them the dangers when they’re online. I would encourage other parents to get the password to their kid’s devices to search for things that shouldn’t be happening.

Tech Movie- A Digital Nation

Posted by Leah Bradstreet in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 11:27 am

Over the past fews weeks, our Tech Class has been watching a very informative documentary, "A Digital Nation."

The aim of this show was to inform its viewers of the dangers and wonders of our present internet world. As we watched this video, I'd have to say that the most memorable thing I saw was the personal real-life accounts of instances where the internet had some part in a problem of one's life as a problem, solution, or both. In my opinion, it is important to watch shows such as these because they enable their viewers a chance to become more familiar with a concept in our modern world that affects our lives daily.

To keep my future family safe online, I will make sure that they are also aware of the dangers and perks of the internet- as well as what to do in any problematic situation involving our online world. I think that it is important to talk with my family about such matters because it helps both them and myself to become better aware of the consequences and rewards of the internet together. We can watch out for each other. To parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online, I would advice that you first become familiar with this information, then speak to your children about it. The most important thing is to TAKE ACTION against online threats to your children. Don't just sit by in ignorance.

I would hope that they take my advice.

My Digital Media Reflection

Posted by Leo Cassel-Siskind in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 11:11 am

Leo Cassel-Siskind

In class we have been watching Digital Nation. It is about how all humans and teenagers in particular are online so much more than they used to be that being online is becoming a new lifestyle. The most scariest thing I viewed was about how people were chatting each other and encouraging each other to kill each other. There was even a website you could go to for the best place to kill yourself. It’s important to learn about things like this because it helps us protect ourselves online and helps us understand what we are doing online. If I was a parent I would make sure that I could see what my family was doing online whether talking to friends or posting pictures on social media. It’s important to do this so that in case someone is bullying my kids I can see that’s happening and help them out. Parents today who grew up without all of these things need to keep track of all the things their kids are doing online even though it may annoy them. Being online can be dangerous and they need to be protected.

Reflection

We had to watch a documentary about media and how it affects people in this generation. For me, the most memorable thing about this show was Ryan's tragic story. It's really sad when you find out that a kid was so unhappy that they thought taking their life would help. I think it's important to watch these types of films so you get a different perspective on this topic. There were many different people talking in the show from very opposite sides of the argument. I have a really good relationship with my mom and if I need help with something I go to her. If I ever have a family in the future I'm going to try to pass that relationship on and let them do what they want. My mom isn't overbearing at all, she let's me go on social media and gives me as much freedom as I need as long as I keep my grades up and stay out of trouble. Hopefully in the future, my family has a relationship like that because in reality it's the ideal relationship for parents and children. If I were giving someone advice on this topic, I would tell them to just talk to their child; don't demand anything, don't make them give you their passwords, just talk. Don't just talk once continue talking, a lot. Tell them how you feel about the internet situation, but don't limit your conversations to just that. Talk about everything and anything, they will reply. Simply put, just communicate with your kids.

Growing up online

Posted by Rebecca Snyder in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 7:15 pm

In class we watched Digital Nation. This show was about instances that occurred online and how communities have reacted to the growing environment online. The most memorable thing about this show to me is when the mother emailed the whole school about a concert a large group of students went to and their maybe inappropriate behavior there. It’s important to watch shows like these in order to realize the consequences of what we post online and how it can affect our world outside of the internet. In order to keep my future family safe online, I will make sure everyone knows the consequences of online activity. I will also make sure they are aware of the people online and how to not give out private information. It’s important to talk with our family’s about internet safety because it’s a resource that affects us all and can be very harmful. It’s important that it’s a common discussion so that everyone develops good common practices. I would tell parents to talk openly about online activity and teach their children good practices so that they keep those ideas in mind while online.

Tech class this quarter is awesome! We have watched two videos about the impact of the internet and the digital world. In this post I will be talking to you about the video Digital Nation. If you want to learn more keep reading, be prepared for lots to read. Digital Nation is the continuation of the virtual frontier. How it affects us and how it becomes the center of our attention, and also the internet may help/hurt the world. During this video we talked about army recruits via gaming, and in the video they showed all the things that might hurt people via the internet. This video is called a documentary which children our age don't watch because they pack information in like a balloon filling up with air. We should watch them because it tells us about everything we already know, but don't want to pay attention to. Videos like this help people see their reality and how it affects us and how it should not. Ms.Hull asked how we would be with the internet if we were to be future parents, and I thought long and hard about my answer. Here it is: ¨I think by putting rules in place will keep them safe, but also showing them how you trust them. To always tell them when they start to look at sites that might affect their health and wellness. I don't want to be like the parents who kept the computer in the kitchen, but I also don't want to be the parent who lets their child do whatever on the computer. I want to be the future who has a give and take relation when dealing with the internet. Such as: the parents of the girl who expressed herself through picture art. In order for her to trust them with what she was doing, they first had to understand. At first the parents didn't until the realized how the internet brought something out in their daughter, then they excepted.¨ I think parents of this age or even us will never fully grasp the internet and its affects on our world or future generations. I think the one think parents assume children know the rules of the internet, but we don´t, we only know popular. If parents set rules then we would get stuck, but sometimes you can´t always put blame on others. The importance of internet safety is so big now because children in the USA can have friends all the way in Spain and that can be ok. Safety is the one thing we need to think about when opening any device. Trust is important when on the computer, if you don trust your child then your child doesn't trust you with their social life.

In class we watched a show by Frontline called Digital Nation and Growing Up Online. The show was about how the Internet is becoming more of a part of our lives and how it influences us, our jobs, and our military. The most memorable thing about this show is the story about Ryan and how he committed suicide because of the things that people said about him online. It was very interesting and scary to see how something so useful like the internet can be used in so many bad ways. It is important to watch shows like this so that we do not have to repeat the things that happened and so we can prevent things like this from happening. As of now, I do not know how I am going to protect my future family for a simple reason. Since technology is progressing SO fast, I do not know what to expect from the internet and technology in general twenty years from now. But I do know that I will be monitoring all internet usage. The internet is a very dangerous thing. Even though the internet can be very helpful in more than one circumstance, it can be used for many bad purposes. Some advice I would give to parents is to make sure their kids are not involved in anything suspicious. Also I would advise them to make sure their children know about all of the dangers of the internet.

Growing Up Online Reflection, Kendall

We watched Growing Up Online and Digital Nation. These shows were about the people who grow up with the internet always around. It shows how people used it. The most memorable thing about this show was Ryan and his tragic story. It is important to watch shows like this because you can learn from the people in the movie and how to utilize technology. To keep my future family safe online I will give a limit to how long they can be online. It is important to talk to your family about internet safety because they are a lot things on the internet that we should all be aware of. A piece of advice to give parents that don’t know how to keep their children safe online is to monitor them.

In class we watched the show Frontline - Digital Nation, which talked about media, how people use it, and the affect it has on people who use and don't use it. I distinctly remember seeing how different teenagers used media to post about themselves and talk to others, and how it wasn't used in the best way. It's important to watch shows like this so that people can see what goes on in media. It's also good to watch because it tells us what a lot of dangers and hazards are so we can better protect ourselves. If I have a family in the future I would make rules and set limits for using media. I would also make sure to go over what they should try to be aware for and what to avoid. It's important to talk with family about media to keep them safe and make sure they're okay. I would tell parents that don't know how to protect their kids online a summary of what can go on in media and that they need to check to see if their kids are using media in bad ways.

In class we watched the show Growing up online, and digital nation by Front Line. The shows were about children growing up with all kinds of new technology from two different years. The most memorable thing for me was Ryan’s story about his suicide because of the shock of it. It’s important to watch these shows because they show things that could happen online. Why it's not important is because the show shows the extremes of what can happen, like Ryan’s story, while that happens very rarely. When I’m a parent, I will ask about what they do online, and not be that strict about it so they don’t feel like they need to lie. It’s important to talk to your family about this so they don’t have this rare occasion happen to them. I would tell the parent to just have their kid explain the things they do, and try to judge if its dangerous from seeing what they do.
