Goal #3: Get to know a stranger/ask random question

Posted by Longnu Nhan in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 11:27 am

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Angel Cares. He's 22 years old and he lives in Chile. I chose to speak with him because he seemed nice and I liked his name.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he is studying psychology in college and that he's been in college for 4 years now.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
It helped me move towards my achievements because I didn't expect for him & I to talk about college. He asked me a lot of questions, which I thought was cool because I wasn't doing all the work.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I think I did pretty well with asking questions that wasn't so boring. That's what random is all about.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on?
I need to improve on my long sentences. Making sure that it sounds right.

Henninger Conversation, Post 1

Posted by Sophia Henninger in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 11:08 am

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with a man named Sergio and he was a native spanish speaker. This man invited me to private chat and I asked him if I could ask him questions for a class of mine. He was very polite and accepted.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned he was from spain. I asked about what kind of music was popular and what was on the radio. He told me what kind of music he listened to. He said he liked jazz and classical music.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
It helped me understand that is spain, they listen to the same types of music we do, only the artists are speaking spanish.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I found very good answers to what types of music are popular in spain. I think it was good because he helped me understand that they don't only listen to flamenco or chahca or any other stereotypical spanish music.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)rc
I wish I had asked more questions about the culture and not specifically to Sergio.

Conversation #2

Posted by Sabrina Stewart-McDonald in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 9:01 pm

Who did you speak with and why?
I spoke with a 25 year old man named Carlos Gonzales. I spoke with him because he invited me to chat on Sharedtalk.

What did you learn about the person? What did you learn from the person?
I learned that he is from Santiago, Chile. From him, I learned that there is also a lot of crime and violence in Santiago, though tourists usually find it peaceful.

How did the interaction help you with your personal goals?
I want to learn about the daily life in other countries, mainly because when I picture other countries, I think of them as being way different from the US, but this is not the case. So, in talking with Carlos, I proved, even more, that other countries are very like the US and there is just as much violence, though we may think not.

What did you do well to achieve your personal goals? What do you need to improve on to achieve your personal goals?
I did well with finding a person who had a lot of information. I chatted with a few other people, but Carlos had provided me with the most information about his country and the life there. I think I could've done better by finding more than one source; maybe getting more than one perspective.

Second conversation.

Posted by Marley Utzig in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 7:40 pm

Second Week:

Partners Name: Robert/ Mauro

City y Country: Peru/Buenos Aires

(The people on Livemocha would only talk to me a tiny bit.)

Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner.

I spoke with a man on Livemocha, he messaged me because he was learning English and I am learning Spanish. Both men messaged me to talk so I just went with it.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned Mauro lives in Buenos Aires, and Robert wants to learn to speak English.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

The more I speak in Spanish the more comfortable I become, Mauro knew no English so speaking to him forced me to only speak in Spanish. This was helpful but difficult and I found myself looking at word reference a lot

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I spoke only in Spanish and tried to keep a basic conversation. This needs to change, these conversations are awkward at best and using Livemocha is harder then expected. I want to figure out how to hold just a basic conversation before I try and learn anything about their culture.

Deportes en Mexico

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 12:36 pm

What does sports look like in Mexico?

¿Qué déportes important en Mexico?

¿Haces deportes?

¿Qué deportes en muy grande en Mexico?

¿Haces ves fútbol?

¿Deportes es mucho importante en Mexico o arte es muy importante?

¿Deportes en las escuela?

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am looking forward to learning about the sports in Spain. I know Soccer is big but I am curious to see what else is big.

What are you nervous about?
I am kind of nervous to talk to someone that I don't know over the internet.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to some boy in Mexico. I choses him because he was the only one out of like 6 people that actually wrote me back.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
    He plays tennis.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I didn't know they played tennis in Mexico. He didn't really answer my questions. He was confused. Was my spanish not good enough?

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I learned a little bit about some sport stuff. It also wasn't to bad talking to someone I didn't know that lived in a different country.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I said "¿Qué deportes en muy grande en Mexico?" I meant es not en so I fixed it by doing the * and maybe thats why he was confused and signed off?

Learning about Argentina :D

Posted by Kenisha Hood in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 11:57 pm

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with a guy named Francisco who is from/lives in Argentina in a city called Buenos aires. I met this person through livemocha.com. I technically did not choose this person, but I am glad I did because they taught me a lot about Argentina.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

The person I talked to was very nice and they answered all my questions I needed to know about they're country and they also told me about themselves as well. They told me how the streets aren't really that safe and there's a lot of crimes/thefts. As for the education, neighboring countries come to learn in their country. They have a lot of public schools as well. The country of where he is from is where the "Tango" (dance)came from. This guy is also in a rock band  (He's the guitarist) and him and his band play at clubs and events. Overall, this was a nice person to chat with.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

It help me learn a lot about the country then what I would learn in a text book or a website on the internet.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I kept the conversation flowing and we had a good conversation overall.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)rces to Find Conve

I really need to work on my conjugations. There are a lot of un-conjugated words because I couldn't think on the spot of what they could be.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Max. He is my friend and I knew that we were good at helping each other.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned some things from him. More about him though rather than any spanish.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

This interaction helped me because it was a great starting place for me.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I tried to talk more about him instead of myself.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I need to talk more about myself and stop asking the other person questions.

Turning Off the Translator

Posted by Kamilah Hudson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 2:16 pm

  1. Title the post appropriately based on your conversational goals

Turning off the Translator

- How long can i go without a using a dictionary or translator

- How long can i go without using eng

  1. In your post write your goals for this conversation.  You might want to find out more about a particular subject, to implement conversational tactics, or to discuss a certain topic.

-See how long i can go without using a translator or looking up a word.

- See if i can talk all spanish (no english)

-Looking up phrases I might need before the conversation:

- What do you do for fun in - Que hacer tú haces por diversión en

- Are you in school? - Eres en escuela?

-Cual son tu aficiones? - What are your hobbies?

-List of verbs: http://www.linguasorb.com/learnspanish/most-common-verbs.aspx

- LIst of Adjectives: http://www.braser.com/spanish-learning/spanish-adjectives-people.html

Do i feel secure enough in my spanish skills to not use any translator, dictionary, or reference?
