Imani Famous Banana Pudding

1 pack of Vanilla instant pudding mix

2 cups of Milk

1 container of Cool Whip

1 pack of Vanilla Wafers

6 Banana’s

1 Mixing bowl

1 Container

Whisk

Spoon or Spatula

How to Make

Step One:

Put the instant pudding mix into the mixing bowl then add two cups of milk

Step Two:

Stir pudding with whisk until it is nice and thick ( roughly stir for 2 minutes you can tell if it is thick by scooping some with whisk than turing whisk upside down... If it drips than it needs to be stirred more)

Step Three:

Add Cool Whip. FOLD COOL WHIP IN PUDDING SLOWLY    (If not done slow than the pudding will get flat and nasty EWWWWWWW)

Step Four:

Let it sit in refrigerator for as long as you can. Note: It is best if it sits overnight to get nice and cool and thick but if you are in a rush that is fine if it sit 10 or 20 minutes.

Step Five:

Grab Container and place the Vanilla Wafer down but so the back of the Wafer is facing up

Step Six

Add Banana on top of Wafer

Step 7: Add Pudding mix

Step 8:

Repeat Step 5,6 and 7 until container is full with pudding

Step 9:

Make the pudding look presentable by adding:

Strawberries

Wafers on top

Wafer Crumbs

Anything your heart desire

Step 10:

Enjoy

Analysis

Banana pudding is a desert that is brought to every family function. The reason is because it is a nice sweet dish that hits home after eating a delicious plate of (What my family calls) soulfood. 95% of the banana pudding is processed due to the fact that everything except the banana’s are processed.

This dish is apoxietmently 1070 calories which is a lot but that’s only the case if you decide to eat the whole thing by your self. There is a lot of artificial flavors in this dish with the cookies, and pudding mix and cool whip. There is also a lot of fat too. The way your body will deal with this is ideally you will find yourself using the bathroom to let it all run through your system or you will find your stuff very gassy with a lot of “Silent killers.” Yes this dish is a dish a health freak would definitely stay away from because of all the fat and calories and sugars but it’s a nice sweet dish that happens to not be healthy for you.

My food was definitely commercially grown. Well it was made through a factory. Factories are not the best for our environment due to all the wasted electricity and how it affects our ozone layer. Honestly I do not know where my ingredients came from but I will have to say the midwest because that is what comes to mind when I think of dairy products, and pudding. Which is strange because banana pudding is more of a  southern dish.

The great thing about banana pudding is that it is not that expensive, it cost me roughly $15.00 to make this dish. Now usually if I was being lazy I would grab a half decent banana pudding from the chinese store which cost only $1.00 but the saying goes “you get what you pay for.” So comparing the Chinese store with my banana pudding you can tell there is a complete different to how it is made and the effort that is put into it. Chinese store banana pudding is only good when you’re hungry and you need something fast to hold you over for a couple of hours. Where my banana pudding is good all the time hungry or not hungry my banana pudding satisfies the stomach.

Reflection

I honestly learned very little due to the fact that my class schedule always seemed to fall on a day we did not have school or a day that I had an appointment or could not be in school. Which sucks because I wanted to learn about the pros and cons when reading ingredients on the back of box.  But I did learn our sugar prices is going up. I have also learned of a western diet and why it is bad for you

My Role larger food system is that I don’t waste food. So I pretty much am one of the people environmentalist and socialist (I think) don’t scold because of how much wasted food goes on in the U.S. Also due to my diet change about 7 months ago I only eat fish as meat since I have low iron and refuse to take iron pills. So another role is that I do not eat the chickens nor support how they are taken care even though I was just a recent support of eating chicken and not asking questions on how they are taken care of.

The biggest problem with our food system and the way our food is made. Companies want to add unnecessary stuff to our foods to make it bigger but it ends up harming us which is not okay. Also the fact that junk food is cheap and healthy food is expensive. We have people wanting us to eat more healthier but we can’t when it cost $7 to get a meal at McDonalds and $17 just to get half a meal at lets say Fresh Grocer.

My Next step to a healthier diet will be drinking only water. and eating less junk food. The reason is because I want to start losing weight for prom. Nothing major just 10 pounds be a solid 140 which I think is a nice size for myself. Exercise and no more banana pudding will help me get closer to my goal.

Through this unit I have learned it is best to eat healthier. I also have stores in my neighborhood that helps with that. I should start to use that to my advantage. Thank you Mr. Best for an awesome semester

Recipe

Jamaican Potato Salad

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of diced potatoes
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup of mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup of corn
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/4 cup of corn
  • 1/4 cup of peas
  • 1/4 cup of carrots
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt

Directions

  1. Wash, peel, dice and cook and the potatoes with eggs
  2. When the potatoes are boiled, you need to drain it instantly.
  3. place everything in a large bowl.
  4. Add corn, peas and carrots.
  5. Stir the pot with the mayonnaise with salt and pepper.
  6. Add chopped eggs and stir lightly once more

Analysis

Health- Now that I have went through what goes into making this dish, I do not think it is as healthy as I originally thought. After making the dish I realized that it was really high in calories due to the amount of mayonnaise needed to finish it. Also, the carrots and corn come from a can so they are most likely processed. The Corn was low in sodium, depending on what they define as high. I do not believe that the eggs and potatoes were processed, and eggs can be bad if too much is consumed, but the entire dish only required 2 eggs.

Environment- I think that the canned foods came the farthest away because I am sure that the farms that produced the eggs and potatoes are relatively closer that a factory to process the food.

Economic- In all making this dish, which was made to feed 8-10 people, cost my family 10 dollars.  At a fast food place it would cost around 20-30 dollars to feed the 6 people in my house. We would have saved a lot of money if we did this regularly. Since all of my ingredients can come from a farm, those in control of the farm industry would have made the money.

Social-  I would think that the foods that were not processed would only have to go to packaging then to the store to me. Mayonnaise would need to be the collaboration of other ingredients for it to even be mayonnaise. The canned foods would need to be preserved and canned.

Producing eggs myself would quickly become too expensive. I would need to get chickens and keep them in proper living conditions. Even if I grew the vegetables. I would need to buy a place to put them and keep them healthy as well.

Reflection

My role in this larger food system is to buy the food that companies made by very cheap and inhumane means. Since they control most foods and so many foods are available cheaply for me to purchase, it is really tempting. To me, the biggest problem is the antibiotics that they inject into the animals before they are slaughtered. I have always worried that there will be a mutation in the food that we will be un-able to fight against because it would have mutated to be immune to most systems and medicines. I could start eating organic food, but that would become costly very quickly. Since it is not in my budget to buy organic food, I can't afford to change. If organic foods were more accessible and less pricey I would most likely change my diet for the better.

    Food Slide

Logan, jackfruit, tapioca dice and tapioca pearls with coconut milk

    Serves 10-15

    Cooking time: Approximately 1 hour

    Ingredients:

    • 4 cups of fresh logan fruit
    • 2 cups of fresh jackfruit
    • 1 cup of tapioca pearls
    • 7 oz of tapioca dice
    • 3-5 cans cans of coconut milk
    • 2 cups of sugar
    • Salt

    Tools:

    • 2 sauce pans
    • Cooking strainer
    • Utensil for stirring

    Directions

    Fruits:

    • Peel off the logan and jackfruit from the shells and remove the seeds (I bought the fruits from cans)
    • Thinly slice the jackfruit
    • Slice logan into halves (optional)

      Tapioca dice and pearls

    • Bring water to a pan and add the water halfway to the pan
    • Let the water boil before adding in the tapioca
    • Add tapioca in water for approximately 10 minutes or wait until the tapioca turns clear
    • Make sure to stir the tapioca so it won't stick to the pan

    Coconut milk sauce

    •  Bring a saucepan to boil and add water 1/2 way to the pan
    • Let it sit until boiled
    • Add 1/4 cup of salt
    • Add the in the coconut milk
    • Gradually add 3 cups of sugar and stir the sauce

    Analysis:
This is a Cambodian/Asian traditional dessert. Cambodian typically make this dessert for special occasions like Cambodian New Year or whenever you have a family gathering. You can easily find similar desserts to this one anywhere in a Cambodian local grocery store or at a Chinese/Vietnamese supermarket. This dessert takes approximately an hour to cook.

Health - Although there are fruits included in this dessert, it is not the most healthiest dessert as you originally thought. After making this dessert, I realized it was high in calories due to the amount of sugar it has been added into the coconut milk sauce. Also, the logan, jackfruit and coconut milk was from a can, so they are most likely to be considered as processed. Since the fruits are from cans there are syrup and more sugar added to the fruits in can to make it not go rotten.
Environment - Food cans are made for "connivence" purposes. If people want tomato sauce they would  most likely buy the tomato sauce that were already made and distribute into a jar and/or can rather than making the tomato sauce from scratch. Food cans are convenient and it is easier to open up the can and throw in the pan, but what most people don't think about is the ingredients that are in those cans.
Economic - Most of the ingredients were from cans and bags. This dessert cost me about $13 to make and it serves about 10-15 people. My family would eat this dessert for 3 days, but it isn't the healthiest choice to have this for dessert all the time. Most of my cans comes from an Asian factory and they would have made the money if anyone chooses to eat fruits from a can than buying fresh fruits.

Social -  I'd always thought processed food only have all these additives, preservatives and sugars, that your body just does not need. Ultimately, it seems that there are sauce and spread like ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard are processed food because it wouldn't be ketchup, mayonnaise, or mustard if it didn't have any other ingredients in it the bottle.

It's always better to buy fresh fruits and make your own sauce or any other food paste from scratch. It is much healthier and they are all natural ingredients. You know what you are putting into what you are making, so it isn't preservatives. Homemade cooking and making things from scratch is a better option.

    Reflection:

or this unit, I have learned a lot about things that I didn’t know in the past. Especially the importance of nutrition and the label of nutrition facts. The past two weeks into this unit, I noticed how much better I’ve been eating. As a teenager, I would eat what a typical teenager eat and that would be tons of “crap” food. Everyday, I tried to consume enough veggies and fruits. When we watched a short documentation in class of why our food could contain either a corn or soybean ingredient or both, that has opened my eyes on a bigger scale. I rarely eat red meat, but looking back to it I thought I would rather become a vegetarian.

Our food system is filled with unhealthy and bad choices and they come in cheaper prices. Fast food restaurants are everywhere near us. It is convenient, cheap and that is why people tend to turn to the bad choices. It really depends on how you want to eat. Eating healthy can be very expensive, but you really have to think about how much you can get out of buying a meal at a fast food restaurants to cooking your own meal at home. It is much better to cook your own food because you will know how much ingredients you are putting in your food and you can make more. If you’re going to McDonald all you can eat is a burger with fries and soda on the side, but with homemade cooking there are many other options.

I am willing to make these changes and I am currently owning up to it. One thing I have learned to become healthy is to eat less meat. That is not a problem to me. I don’t eat meat everyday or red meat meat as often. I typically have white meat over red meat. I believe if we can all cook at home and don’t eat out often, we can tackle obesity.

    Recipe and Analysis

    Fried chicken

    Ingredients:

Chicken cut nice and clean. (make sure its washed really well)

    About 1/2 cup buttermilk

    2 cups of flour

As my mom says a pinch of salt

and 1/2 cup of s vegetable oil

about a sprinkle ground black pepper.

    Directions:

Make sure it WASHED really well before doing anything.

Cut it the breast pieces what ever way you want it to be.

After putting  all the Ingredients in put the flour last.( doesn't matter what order you do it as long as the flour is last)

Not theirs many ways you can cook the chicken.

You can Bake the fried chicken or you can deep fri it.

My mom normally fri it first.

You get a pot  or something that can pour oil into.

Heat the oil up for about 350 degrees F.

Let each piece sit  in the frier for about 10 min then you flip it over.

     Analysis:

Well this  isn't really all that much of a family recipe its more of a dish that my family really loves to cook.My mom and her mom taught her how she makes her chicken and  her mom just pasted it down to my mom.For the most part this MEAL  is health because  Red meat is naturally nutrient-rich which means it provides a substantial amount of certain vitamins and minerals. Meat also contains water, helping it to remain lower in calories compared with other foods. The following table shows which meats are a recognised source of vitamins and miners to help  the body grow more muscle.

Chicken has bee around for a while now so it came form all over the world. But during the native american times they use to hunt for foods. but when people from all over the world came around the native americans they picked up different t ways to cook the meat. For example where a lot of south america is they cook chicken using basic ingredients

    Personal Reflection

Well looking on back on this unit leared that   most of the food thta we eat  now that we know isnt healthy for us. But for some reason we still are being fede  that type of stuff. Not only does it hurt our body but our goverment still sells us this type of food.  thats what i think is the main problem with kids in todays world. places like McDonald's sell food under a really low price and they know teens love things like fast food that cheep and anyone could get. But in my case my eyes are open now. i want to change my diet and start eating more right. so that when i get older my body isnt that messed by the time i really old. I can look back on my life and think about things that could have been really bad for me because of the leason I know so much more. Eating right sets good examples for everyone.I could start to work out more and watch what i eat. And get things like furit.

      Food project

      Ingredients:

      Light cream

      Grated Cheese

      Chicken

      Artichokes

      Pasta

      Garlic

      Oil

      Butter

      Directions:

      Cut chicken into fourths

Heat butter and oil and garlic

      add cream after a while

      add grated cheese

      Boil Pasta

      MIX all in bowl

      cook artichokes

Add them to bowl and mix

      Completed

      Nutrients:

All together a serving would be up to 200 calories, it's not the healthiest foods but it's all natural, we use the freshest cream they have in the supermarket, the cheese added is only 20 calories

The artichokes we buy fresh and cut up i'm not sure the calories but it's fresh and not from a can

The chicken we get the breasts and nothing else and we get the fat out of it with a knife and we cut them into fours and and taking out the fat gets rid of 40 callers from the 100 calories from the pack so the chicken lis only 60 calories

Analysis: What iv'e learned is that it doesn't matter how many callers something is to be healthy but where it comes from, i'd rather have a 200 calories home cooked meal than a 70 calorie Mc Donald's burger, because of how un natural it is and what it's made from, so even though my food is technically more un heathy, it's not because it comes from a legit place.

      Tyanna Pleasant!

Posted by Tyanna Pleasant in Science and Society - Best - E on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 12:53 pm

      Ingredients

      • 2 jars of Ragu Chunky Tomato, Garlic & Onion- 125 g
      • 1box of Barilla spaghetti noodle. 56 g
      • 1lb of Cargill ground beef
      • 3 tablespoon of minced garlic
      • 2 cups of sugar

      Procedures:

      1. Start by boiling a tall pot of about 4 cups of water.
      2. Next, add the pasta to the boiling water. As you add them, break them in half. It would be easier to put them in there in sections, and not all at once when breaking them up.
      3. Meanwhile, as the noodle are getting soft inside of the boiling water, start to cook the ground beef in a pan, make sure you have the top. Chop up the beef up with a spatula so it wont burn, after about 5 mins, add the top and tend to the noodles but keep your eye on the beef so it wont burn. Keep chopping it from time to time.
      4. Check the noodles, take one out, taste it and determine if it is soft enough for you.
      5. Once the noodles are done, check that the ground beef is all brown, you should not eat any red meat because its not cooked all the way.
      6. Drain the beef once its all done.
      7. You then mix the beef with the noodles, add the sugar, 2 jars of Ragu, and the garlic. Mix together very well so that each noodle has sauce on it! And ENJOY!

      Analysis

This meal is 95% processed and each of its ingredient starts of from a raw plant or vegetable, but eventually goes through a process to get the delicious taste it has. The 5% is from the minced garlic which came from actual garlic cloves from a Farmers Market. If you ate this everyday, you could be in risk of having heart disease and diabetes. This meal gives off a lot of fat and salt from the ground beef and the sauce. Without moderation of this meal, you could get diabetes or high blood sugar. The added sugar makes this meal less nutritious. Sugar in the sauce plus the added sugar is unhealthy.

Since most of the ingredients was commercially grown, it had a negative impact on the environment. A cow had to be killed, which decreased the CO2 it produced and let out into the air, while making the sauce, chemicals had to be sprayed on the tomatoes, then to smash the tomatoes up into a sauce like structure was most likely done by machines which released gas into the air, Im not too sure about the pasta was made, but I do not think it have a big negative impact on the environment, the making of the sugar used some type of machinery to crush it up into small grains and I don't think the garlic had a negative impact on the environment. The ingredient that may have traveled the farthest to end up in your meal is probably the sugar. Most of the U.S’s sugar comes from the Caribbean. and the tomatoes comes from California. The beef comes from different farms in Canada and the U.S.

Overall, this meal cost $12.82 if you buy each ingredient from ShopRite. Which is not bad when comparing it to buying spaghetti when going out to a restaurant which will be about $15 dollars or up. You also will know that it is safe and you know how its being cooked and how is cooking it because you are making it at home. It is also better than going out and buying it because you can modify it yourself so that it tastes just how you want it to.

      Personal Reflection

What I learned this unit, that I do no eat as healthily as I should, and I could eat so much better. I buy a lot of the foods that are processed without even thinking about where it came from or what happened to it for it to taste so delicious. I help support these farmers who do this to these animals and spray all of the chemicals on out vegetables and fruits to make them larger. I also learned that some of the animals are being treated harshly and in live in conditions that are not suitable for their life and they are not expected to live long. The foods go through a long process and is genetically engineered to grow faster than they are supposed to naturally. I think that the biggest problem with our food system is that lots of people don't know, or think about how their food first started out as. I think because it taste so good, and it meets their expectations in food, such as a big size. Changes I could make to my food choices is to look at the food labels and remember what I learned this unit. The biggest impact of these changes on me would be, I will become healthier, it will reduce my risks of diabetes and cancers or other health deficiencies that could come later in life from eating these foods. I am willing to make some changes, but I do not think I will commit to making all of them.

      Sugar

      Flour

      Butter

      Eggs

      Sprite Soda

      Lemon Flavor

      Cream butter an sugar.

Add in 1 egg at a time

      Beat it.

Mix in the sprite and lemon extract mixture in alternately with the flour. Mix well

Bake in an oiled bunt pan

at 325 fahrenheit for an hour or more un tip it's done.

      Lemon Glaze  (wasn't used/ optional)

      2 cups confectioners' sugar

3 to 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Place confectioners' sugar in a medium bowl or liquid measuring cup; stir in lemon juice (glaze should be thick, yet pourable). Add more sugar or lemon juice, as necessary, to achieve desired consistency.

      Lemon Glaze

2 parts water, one part sugar, a few drops lemon essence. Boil until it has a clear syrup texture.

Lemon essence is flammable. Do not set your kitchen on fire.

The meal cost less than 15$ I think.

      With ingredients left over.

All of the ingredients are from America.

Unbleached organic all-purpose flour guarantees that it has mot been genetically modified. Wheat was grown under organic guidelines. Enrichment is voluntary.  Some states required it. Folic acid is required d to help prevent spinal chord injuries.

FDA required eggs to be refrigerated as soon as possible. The FDA required eggs to be graded for inspection to determine for wholesomeness. For quality, it is voluntary.

All packaged raw shelled eggs must carry a specified handling statement if they are not treated for Salmonella. d

"SAFE HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: To prevent illness from bacteria: Keep eggs refrigerated, cook eggs until yolks are firm, and cook foods containing eggs thoroughly."

My eggs did not contain this statement so I'm guessing that they are treated for Salmonella.

      And they are considered kosher.

About Sprite. FDA ensures that carbonated drinks are safe and sanitary. They are also honestly labeled. Manufacturers and consumers are required by the FDA to take specific steps in making sure that the drinks are safe. 'Comes in contact with' is a crucial part. The bottles themselves are also strictly regulated.

For chemical preservatives, their function in the drink is required. such as 'preservative, to retard spoilage, a mold inhibitor' and more.

      - let rice cook for 25 min

      Analysis:

Research: This food  is healthy because it contains a lot of fruit and i chose to put shrimp because shrimp is very good food you. it contains a lot of protein because of all the vegetable and the corn thats in the mixture. Rice is an excellent source of energy. It is comprised of 77.5% carbohydrate; carbohydrate is one of the human body's two main sources of energy, the second being fat. Like other cereals, the carbohydrate in rice is mainly in the form of starch - a complex carbohydrate, and like other cereals the starches occur in granules in the endosperm.

Rice is an excellent food source, low in fat and high in starchy carbohydrate. Rice is packed full of vitamins and minerals and provides an excellent source of vitamin E, B vitamins (thiamin, niacin) and potassium. At 56 micrograms in every 4 ounces, shrimp is an excellent source of the antioxidant mineral selenium. Recent research studies show that the selenium contained in shrimp can be well-absorbed into the human body. The whole meal is easy to digest and it will keep you full.

      Origin:

This recipe is very famous in Asia and thats why most people would eat but the does not mean that other countries don't like the food . In morocco we love rice and we love to put a lot of seasoning in our foods.

Rice is a staple crop and forms the foundation of the diet for many of the world's population, especially those living in Southern and Eastern Asia. There are four major categories of rice worldwide, india, japonica, aromatic and glutinous and it’s thought over 140,000 different varieties of rice, but only a few varieties are grown widely.

      Social:

My family really loves this Recipe thats why i Chose to make it because thats all we eat at home and the reason we chose white rice is because we feel that it tastes better.

However the Shrimp can be Expensive shrimp food is expensive over all. Over all I think that this food is cheap and healthy .

      Personal reflection:

In the Unit i learned a lot about myself and my food choices, I also learned that some foods that i thought tasted good aren't really that good for my body. The biggest problem with our food system is that they make the healthy foods really expensive and the unhealthy food really cheap and don't realize that people had to survive either way if the people can't afford healthy food they are not gonna buy it. That was exactly my case because i am only a teenager so i don't have the money to buy healthy foods , or “organic” foods . so every time i would go out to eat with friends we would go to a fast food place or get some pizza because thats the only thing we can afford. Of Course i would like to change my diet and start eating healthier but i just don't have the money for it . After i saw the video is class about how chicken grow and how meat is being made, now i don't want to eat fast food so what should i eat? This question will never be answered i just feel that they mad being healthy very hard and that is not helping and is killing the society. I am willing to make some changes instead of buying a pack of candy for a dollar i will buy and apple instead . those are the little changes that make a big difference. that why I love science.

Traditional St. Patty’s Day meal for Glasgow/Force Family

      Serves 6

Corned Beef - Choose at least a four pound brisket.

Place brisket in a large pot of water with the season packet.

Bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer 50 to 60 minutes per pound or until fork tender.  Remove and allow to rest while cooking the cabbage.  Slice meat across the grain.

Cabbage - Rinse the head of cabbage and cut into quarters.  When meat has completed cooking, place cabbage quarters in the boiling water and allow to cook for fifteen to twenty minutes.  When completed, remove, drain, and place on plate.  Serve with 1/2 cup melted butter, salt, and pepper to taste, or with vinegar, to taste.

Boiled Potatoes - Peel 5 pounds potatoes and cut into evenly sized chunks.  Place into salted water and bring to a boil.  Cook potatoes until soft, but not mushy.  Drain.  Add 1/2 cup melted butter and a handful of parsley and stir.

Processed - (Assuming getting a piece of meat from the supermarket that is still uncooked is not processed)

      • Butter
      • Vinegar
      • Season Packet

      Unprocessed

      • Beef Brisket
      • Cabbage
      • Potatoes

I would say that it’s about half and half for processed and unprocessed if you just look at the number of ingredients, but if you actually look at the amount after the dish is made then it’s a relatively small amount of the actual food is un processed.  On top of that fact there is a bit of gray area I think as to what exactly is processed and un processed, for example, would something that is just dried out so that won’t rot as quickly really processed?  The way that I’m viewing processed is something more like butter, it is a significant change that changes it completely and isn’t all natural.  If the parsley is just a dried version of the original plant I don’t think that’s really processed.  Due to the butter having a higher fat concentration and the same being true for the meat, this meal is certainly not something that should be eaten on a daily basis as one would definitely gain a lot of weight as a result of not being able to use all of that energy provided by the meal in one’s everyday life.  Obviously stemming form that would all of the other problems that come with, high fat intakes, especially animal fats from the meat and butter, like cancer increases, heart disease, weight gain, and joint issues from that weight.  So this not something that one should eat everyday or really even more than a maximum of probably once monthly.  I’m pretty sure that all of the food comes from within the US when we buy the ingredients, I’m sure that one could find the ingredients from another place outside the US but that’s were we get it, and as far as the processed foods go, any factorial interaction is going to have a negative affect on the environment so I imagine that these did too.  When I asked my mom she said that when not on sale, this meal can cost a little under 30 dollars, but it really depends on things like how big of a piece of meat you buy or how many potatoes or how big the cabbage is.  As for who made money off it all, I would have to say every company involved in the process from the farming companies to the stores that we buy the food from.  While we could probably have grown, things like the potatoes, cabbage, and parsley ourselves in our backyard or something, a cow might have gotten a bit difficult, we would not be able to do any of it during the winter and we certainly wouldn’t have gotten a cabbage or potato as big as those we were able to buy from the store.  I’m not really sure how to go about tracking any of the food other than to say something along the lines, that the potatoes were grown in the ground out in Idaho, as that was where our’s were from, harvested, washed, packaged somewhere, and then shipper over here to pennsylvania to be sold to us and then to be eaten not the most environmentally friendly process but it could be worse, imagine if the potatoes had been grown somewhere else, like Ireland.

      Sci-Soc Slide
I do have to say that during this unit I've learned more than a few things, about how food works on a government scale, and how it works down to the meal we actually eat.  Among that there are some of the issues with the actual consuming of those type of foods, not to say I thought eating at McDonalds was healthy but some other examples I didn't think were that bad.  I didn’t really think that having a steak when I was at someplace like Applebee’s was really that bad for me, ok maybe if I ate nothing but steak and replaced the other parts of the meal with it but just the normal meal, meat and some veggies.   However that’s not the case, just doing something as small as that, eating more red-meat than I need to can increase the chances for me to have health complications later on in life.  Overall though I feel as though I have a pretty good diet, in some cases much better than some of my friends who appear to be healthier, I try to eat plenty of fruits, and veggie’s and I generally accomplish that under a normal circumstance, maybe not on vacations as schedules can be erratic and therefore so can eating, but overall I feel like it’s a pretty good diet.  One thing that I guess I could do to improve it though is to cut down how much my family and I go to fast food places, because while we don’t go that often, going at all is really to much.  One other thing about this unit that surprised me was when we were making a list of the labels on our food and we found some of the actual rules on things, like how something could be called 100% whole wheat just for having 10g or more in the item even if that only actually made if 30% whole wheat.  So in general just a lot of things to think about every time we go to put a piece of food into our mouths from now on.

Food: Chicken & Shrimp Alfredo W/ Red Bell Peppers

      Materials:

      • Pot
      • Sause Pan
      • Cutting board
      • Knife
      • Small bowl
      • Large bowl
      • Strainer

      Ingredients:

      • 2 boxes of Reggano angel hair
      • 3 bottles of Alfredo
      • 1 cup of red peppers
      • 1 1/2 pounds of medium shrimp
      • salt
      • pepper
      • season/soul food seasoning (optional)
      • old bay

      Directions:

      1. Cut small portions of the red bell pepper, take the tails of the shrimp off (if there is any), and the chicken into small portions on the cutting board

      2. Place the red bell pepper, chicken, and shrimp into a small bowl and add the salt, pepper, old bay, and season/soul food seasoning (optional).

      3. Carefully mix so the seasonings would evenly be spread.

      4. Take pot and fill it halfway with warm water and wait for a medium boil, about 5-10 minutes.

      5. Add the 2 boxes of angel hair into pot and wait for it to become stringy and soft, about 15-20 minutes.

      6. Once the angel hair is finished, place it in the strainer for the water to drain out.

      7. Place the angel hair into large bowl and add the shrimp, chicken, and red bell peppers into bowl.

      8. Add the alfredo sauce to the angel hair and mix carefully but thoroughly.

      9. Add more seasoning if needed to bring out spice.

      10. Continue to mix until everything is evenly spread out.

      Analysis:

      Processed Food:

      - Angel Hair

      - Salt

      - Pepper

      - Season/Soul food seasoning

      Whole Foods:

      - Bell peppers

      - Shrimp

      Health & Nutrition:

Large Shrimp - 100 calories, 1.5g of total fat, 460mg of sodium, 21g protein, 0g of sugar

Reggano Angel Hair - 200 calories, 1g of total fat, 0mg of sodium, 7g of protein, 1g of sugar

Bell Pepper - 46 calories, 0g of fat, 6mg of sodium, 1g of protein, 6g of sugar

With these ingredients, the body properly processes the food because the person that consumes the food is giving their bodies sugar, sodium, and lots of protein - specifically coming from the Reggano Angel Hair. If this meal is eaten everyday, it cause some problems within the person's body because it is not getting a good enough balance of the types of food that we are to consume everyday. Yes, there is sodium in each of the ingredients, however, too much of it can cause serious problems like high blood pressure which then leads to issues with the heart. In addition, the body wouldn't be getting enough glucose (sugar) because the ingredients have little to none.

As far as the angel hair spaghetti, it is naturally grown from the ground, however it is processed through factories that make it possible for the distributors to sell it in stores. I know that the angel hair can be grown in Pennsylvania in farms. The red bell peppers do not have to be processed because they are vegetables that are grown. However, they must go through some sort of process to be clean and clear to be sold. The shrimp is from the Atlantic Ocean and then brought over by boats to be processed in ordered to be sold in stores. If the food is processed, then it requires more energy within the factories, which is then polluting the Earth because of all of the chemicals that is being exposed.

The total cost of the meal was approximately $20.00 (rounded). It didn't cost so much because I went to Bottom Dollar where the food is sold at a cheaper price then regular food stores. For a serving of one person, this meal can cause a lot more than what restaurants sell it at. However, because I had to make it for a class, it amounted to be the same price. So basically I can make a meal that feeds 10-20 people for the same price as if one person was eating the meal. This meal is different then fast food because it doesn't contain a whole lot of processed chemicals that fast food meals does. It has been reported that places like McDonalds and Burger Kings causes more negative health factors. For example, weight gain, obesity, diabetes, etc.

Most people that I know eat a meal like this, especially since it has seafood in it. The meal was purchased from a food market where the majority of people in America buy their food. The difference between the commercial process of the food and the self sufficient process is that there wouldn't be a problem with consuming the bad things that the food has in it because it went through the process in order to be sold.

      Self Reflection:

Personally, I have learned a lot in this unit. I learned that 1) it is extremely important for me to make sure that I am eating healthy and setting a healthy diet for myself. As a result, I force myself not to eat out as much as I used to and eat at home. Also, I try to make sure that I add more color to my food. I also learned that not all food are naturally grown and whenever I make a trip to the supermarket, I need to take into account to look at the ingredients and make sure that it would be health enough for me. I know that I am willing to make these changes and I know that it would make a major difference in my growth. If the government makes a change in the way food is distributed in this country, I believe that we would become a more healthier country and we won't be considered as obese.
