Bolivia vs the Dominican Republic

Posted by Jareese Long in Globalization - Laufenberg on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Q3 Globalization Benchmark

The countries I focused on was the Dominican Republic and Bolivia; Bolivia being located in South America and the Dominican Republic being located in North America. The process of completing my benchmark could have been much better but it went as the following. I researched information on both of the countries and noted important facts that I felt should have been included in the benchmark. I then referred back to Diamond's 5 point frame-work and compared both of the countries. I found a cool layout to use for my final product and that's how I completed my benchmark. Reflecting upon the 5 point frame-work, it was not straightforward and required me to dig deeper and perform even more extensive research than I had done already. I also I had to do some more research to thoroughly understand the 5 point framework. If I could have changed anything, I would probably change the layout of my project because I feel like I made it more complex than it had to be along with me feeling like I didn't have enough time to complete the project and in result, my benchmark is late.

Europe Vs. Dominican Republic

Posted by Zillah Hernandez in Globalization - Laufenberg on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Basically the countries i've chosen are kinda going through the same problems but not really. My two countries were Europe & Dominican Republic and the issues europe had was air pollution, soil, water Etc. The issues DR had was water shortages, and soil problems, basically the same but not really. The changes they had were the same and that was that the sea level was rising. Both of my countries are going through something bad and they kinda can't do anything about it at the moment. I thought i did really well on this benchmark, it was a couple of days late but i needed more time to actually think on it and to make it into something. I read a lot about my countries and i've learned things that i thought that couldn't happen in the countries. I thought the 5 points were difficult because there were times where i couldn't find the right information on my countries. If i could change one thing about my project i think it would be the countries because even though i've learned more about 2 countries and that really good but i think i would be more interested in learning about countries with the same problems and how they deal with the problems or what the difference in how they deal with the same issues. Other then that i thought i did a great job on my benchmark and i really worked hard to get it done.

5-Point Framework: Switzerland vs. Portugal

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Globalization - Laufenberg on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 10:24 pm

For my 5-point framework I decided to look at both Switzerland and Portugal and what I found was very interesting to me. I looked at the overall sustainability of each country as well as things like environmental damage, climate changes, international relations and hostile neighbors; when looking at each I noticed that Portugal had a better track record and overall points system then Switzerland particularly in the field of how they dealt with environmental damage because of how they handled things like soil erosions, acid rain and increases in gas emissions and I thought overall the country showed a better grasp and handle on each issue that they came in contact with. When looking at Switzerland I thought it was interesting how even with the problems that they had they really didn't show much improvement in how they fixed each or went about fixing the problem but rather just seemed to brush over the things. I found this project to be very interesting and full of different things that I took away about how to look at countries differently in terms of sustainability and I also found this project interesting when it actually came time to dig deeper and look at how long a country could in fact survive on the system that they already have in place. If I were to do this project again I would probably change the amount of time that we had and maybe change the way I presented it.

Switzerland vs Ethiopia

Posted by Jasmine Gladden in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:59 pm

Reflection: I choose to do my 5 points of framework on Switzerland and Ethiopia. This project was very challenging for me. However, it was interesting learning about these different countries and finding out where they might fit on a scale rating from 1-10. The most challenging part was mostly finding things about Ethiopia. Ethiopia research didn't really go as deep as I wanted it to. Switzerland was sort of easy with the scaling based on the information I was able to find. Further more, if I had the opportunity to do this project again I would have better timing. My timing was off because I didn't think finding things for Ethiopia would be as hard.

France V.s Columbia

Posted by Jesse Weinberg in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 2:54 pm

The 5-point framework was somewhat straightforward, however the stuff that was harder to find was the friendly trade partners or friendly neighbors.   For example when I was trying to find friendly neighbors for France that was not straightforward. I had to keep searching for different for websites. What helped me answer this was Wikipedia and I found out that there were unfriendly trade partners in the 1900’s however after this time period France did work out their issues with them. As of now there are France is friendly with a lot of trade partners.  The process that I took to do this benchmark was that I sometimes I used Wikipedia to gain the understanding to history and used other sites that branched off that site. Also what I did was that I had to read the heading of each website to see what was going to be useful.  In order to complete this benchmark the countries that I used was comparing France and Columbia. France is my election country and Columbia was used for a previous project to I just decided to use that information that was gathered.  I should have spent more time on this and made things more creative then I did.

Russia vs. Vietnam Collapsibility Benchmark

Posted by Samuel Sirochman in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:46 am

I chose Russia and Vietnam. Vietnam is a country that is up coming but just can't take the next step into some amount of international amount of power. Russia on the other hand, is a country that had massive power in the 1990s and is trying to reestablish itself as a superpower.

I had general thoughts, but as I began to make my presentation, I found the sources that perfectly proved my point. It was straightforward, it wasn't impossibly hard but it was more difficult than I expected. I wish I could have put videos into my presentation, however Google Docs doesn't have that feature. I want videos because it would make it more dynamic and interesting.

S.Kabangai- Italy & Russia

Posted by Samuel Kabangai in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 1:58 am

Hello, My name is Samuel Kabangai, I attended Science Leadership Academy (SLA). For our quarter Globalization project, had to compare the 5 point frame work to the countries that we were assigned and the one that we selected. The two countries that I had were Russia and Italy. During the course of this project, I saw that both Russia and Italy are more alike than different. I based this thesis on the 5 point frame work ( environmental damage, climate change, hostile neighbors, friendly trade partners and Society's Response to its Environmental Problems). One brief compression of both of the countries is that they both have the same environmental damage hazards (volcanoes, erosions, floods etc.) It was also interesting to know that both countries handled the problems differently. Italy took long to solve their problems but eventually handled it while Russia just left the problems to solve themselves.

The 5 point frame work was fairly easy for me. It was easy for me to research the information that I needed. I had setbacks and hard time finding some of the information that needed, but it wasn't at an extreme point where in I couldn't find none of the information that I needed.

If I could change anything, I will give more time for the project to be done. Even though the information is easy to find, it also takes a long time to do all the research and put it into a finished product. I am just happy that I learned some new information that i found interesting. And I am happy that Im finished!

DJackson Southern Europe v. Bahamas

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 11:20 pm

For this project I had to compare and contrast the Bahamas with Southern Europe. The Bahamas was the country I was assigned to look at the election system and Southern Europe was assigned to me for the project where we talked about the environment and economy. During the project I noticed that they had some of the same problems when it came to the environment and damages. My process for this project was just to go through all the different point systems and make sure I had enough information to summarize it, put it together and present it. I tried to present it in a way that it seemed like a comparison of each other.
The 5 point frame work was the bases for the project and it sort of helped me with putting this together. It gave me a background of what I needed to have and a check list. It was a little difficult finding all of the information for each one but once I had it everything came together. But if I could change it I think i would have a little more information and maybe a better ending to it. I tried to pull everything together at the end but I think it could have been better.

Gambia & Ethiopia Collapsibility Benchmark

Posted by Brooke Thompson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Globalization BrookeT
  • The countries I reflected were GAmbia and Ethiopia. Gambia was my election country and Ethiopia was a country in sub- surharan Africa. Both countries are extremely poor. While Ethiopia is larger than Gambia both have the same economical problems and a hard time keeping there countries out of extreme debt.
The process in which I used to collect the information for this project was quite simple. I researched information about each country according to the 5 point frame work. I then broke down each countries frame work into simialrties and difference so that it would be easy for me to analyze and find out which country was more likely to collapse.
Although the process i used to find information may sound easy and straight forward. It was actually very challenging. It wasn't easy finding creditable sourcres for factual inormation on trade  or  environmental issues. I came across a lot of biased articles and had to weed out the good ones from the crappy one. Also relating the frame work to each country was a task of its on that took up quite a bit of time.
If I could change anything about my project it would deffinalty be he design of the layout as well as the concluding statement. I feel as though my design was pretty weak and my concluding statement could have been more insightful.
