S.Kabangai- Bringing G.H.T.C to Life- Q4 Benchmark
Samuel Kabangai
Giving Hope To Children (GHTC) is an
organization dedicated to helping children in Sierra Leone with their
educational and everyday needs. This organization was founded by two students
who believed that giving back to their community is very important to humanity.
These are
children that have either lost their parents or live with single parent, who
just have families that are too poor to fund their educational needs like
paying for their school fees, buying their uniforms, school supplies or
sometimes even have enough to eat.
· What did you find most challenging about this
project?
One
thing that I found challenging about the project is finding different organizations in
Philadelphia that do the same work GHTC is doing.
· How did you go about finding this story?
This
story was easy because the founders of GHTC are my sisters. I have been looking
at them step by stem and I fell like this project was a good way to applaud them
of what they are doing and hopefully get them noticed by people around the
world.
· Why do you think this story does not receive
more attention?
The
only reason I can think of is that, the organization is not well known.
Sierra Leone itself does not get noticed as much, so a project that is still
rising will be hard to get noticed.
· Do you think this story will get more
attention over the next
few months? Why? Why not?
Yes,
because my goal and dream is that from this project, GHTC will get noticed and broadcasted to
a bigger, diverse and broader audience.
· What did you learn?
I
learned that in order to make change in a nation or country, you have to take a
step that will make a different regardless if you get help or not. I
want this project to be my first but not last step that I take to create change
and better my country and others.
Globalzation and Philadelphia connection
What I found challenging about this project was trying to find the right pictures to relate to globalization and having to explain it. 2 of the images that I found in my project wasn’t straight forward of how it related to globalization so I had to use the knowledge or information from what I know which was challenging. The two images were a security camera and the Philabundance hunger relief center.
When going about or collecting the images I was trying to find things that was relevant and had a strong history relating back to globalization. I just didn’t want to go use any random pictures. As previously stated I was just trying to find things that were relevant and showed a lot of history.
I really don’t have a favorite image. Looking back it is really challenging to choose because each of these images represent something different and unique about each one. With the images representing something and teaching something new about the history it is difficult to choose a favorite image.
I would say Philadelphia is really prevalent is the evidence of globalization. Philadelphia is very diverse city. Other Cities along with Philadelphia is very diverse. People from other countries are sometimes forced to leave their countries to go find opportunities. In finding the opportunities people go to the US and spread out within every state.
What I learned was that I had to remain patient with trying and figuring out what images I had to use and gather. Once I was able to stay patient and calm with things I was able to get through things. I’ve really learned that it takes many websites to find the best information about each of the images and that how some things are not straightforward.
Brunei and South Korea
Collapseability: Chile vs. Mali
Argentina vs. Madagascar
5 Point framework: Greece vs. Hong Kong
The two countries that I selected were Greece and Hong Kong (not actually considered a country). Greece has recently been through some hard times with its economy and Hong Kong has had a thriving economy because of the help it readily receives from its homeland of China. Hong Kong has a host of trade partners though its connections with China, but that also leaves it with a large amount of enemies as well. Greece, while not having many trade partners, which hurts its economy is not bombarded by hostiles as much because it is so low key when compared to other countries in the area.
My process was fairly simple. It took a while to gather research and other information regarding the economies of both of these countries because they both have such a rich history. Hong Kong has always had a strong economy and getting to the bottom of why this is true was a challenge because many wondered whether staying true to China would be a good move for them. Although the "country" wants to break away from China, they really have no choice but to stay with the homeland because their big corporations and banks keep Hong Kong's economy thriving. It was a bit easier finding information on Greece because of their recent economical mishaps. The five points of framework were somewhat difficult to apply to these countries because I couldn't tell if I should apply them to just recent events or things that had happened far back in the past.
If there was anything that I could change about my project it would be to choose a form of presentation that could get my information across better than a keynote. I feel like I could have said a lot more but restricted myself because I wanted the keynote to look a bit nicer. However, I fell like the keynote got the point I was trying to make across to the viewer well enough.

Collapsibility: Malaysia v. The Gambia
www.malaysiaandthegambia.weebly.com
The two countries I've researched are The Gambia, in Africa and Malaysia, in Southeast Asia. Both countries are going through their own specific problems but both are facing some trouble environmentally. I was assigned the country (The Gambia) when my teach had us working on researching elections in other countries. I was assigned Malaysia when my classmates and I were researching global goods, local costs in other countries. For the benchmark we were given the task of comparing the two countries we had and rating their sustainability and collapsibility. To see how collapsible the countries were we applied the "5 point framework" Jared Diamond discussed in his book. The 5 point framework is fairly simple. It consists of the countries Environmental Damage, Climate Change, Friendly Trade Partners, Hostile Neighbors, and its Society's Response. We then rated the countries on their collapsibility. 10 means they were in good standing and sustaining and 0 means they are in serious trouble. If I could change one thing about my project it would be the time I submitted it and the countries I'd chosen. Since I was assigned these wo countries it would have been exciting to look into two countries from the same regions that I didn't know as much about.
