Describe a day in the life

Posted by Diana Laufenberg in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 2:33 pm
For the average 12 yo (boy or girl, you pick) in your country that you focused on last week... what is the average day like.

Make a visualization of the day.. you can timeline it with pix, do something more creative.

But by the end of class on Tuesday you should have a representation of that day... with regard to education and health at a minimum... feel free to include more factors and indicators. Provide at least 5 CITED sources to your creation.

When you are done, link to it on SLA.org blogger - SLATE. Double check that your link works. In addition to the link, reflect on... how does this life compare that that of yours when you were 12? What was most surprising about your findings? What parts were expected? What do you think that 12yo's life will be like when they are 40? Describe it... what will have changed, what will have stayed the same?

Peruuu & North Koreaaa

Here is where you can learn about the differences and similarities of Peru & North Korea.

For the benchmark I chose to do Peru and North Korea. Peru is located in South America and North Korea in South East Asia. The process it took was a long one. I thought that it would be a little easier then it was but I decided to go above and beyond and go a little more in to detail then I originally thought I would have to. The way I did my 5 point framework was pretty straight forward. I organized it in a way so that would be easy to follow and then graded both the countries in the end to summarize the entire project. If I could change anything I wouldn't. It was easy just a lot of research.

Globalization 3Q Benchmark: Collapsing Knowledge

Posted by Camille Morton in Globalization - Laufenberg on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 10:51 pm

This is my benchmark!

The two countries that I selected to compare and contrast were Iceland and Chile. My main reasons behind selecting these countries was I had an interest in the two countries. I didn't know much about the two and I wanted to see how they compare to each other. My process during this project was a little poor. I wasn't aware that we had a benchmark coming up due to the fact that I was out sick during the time it was due. I found out a day before the project was due that we actually had one. So if I could change one thing I would change how I communicated with Ms. Laufenberg. I shouldn't have emailed her and told her that I was going to be out for a week and asked if we were going to be assigned any projects. One of the most challenging parts of the project was locating information on the environmental damage and how both countries are trying to fix the problem.

Marshall's Q3 Globalization BM

My benchmark

The countries I used were Rwanda and Iran, two countries that have been in and out of wars for the last few decades. For each of the five points of collapse, I would research what the status of the issue had been for the last 40-80 years. If the problem was only getting worse, I would give it lower than a five, if it was steadily increasing, I would give it more than a five. How much more/less than a five I'd give the issue was dependent on the severity of the problem within the country. The only part of the five point framework which was difficult to analyze was the society's response to environmental damage. Friendly trade partners tied in with hostile neighbors, and environmental damage tied in with climate change. The societies response was always difficult to find because there are so many different opinions on the matter. If I could change one thing about my project, I'd make it more creative or visually appealing. I'm satisfied with the information I got, but visual appeal has never been a strong suit.

Reflection

  • Briefly summarize the countries that you selected.

The two countries I did my third quarter benchmark on were Brazil and Haiti. I choose these to countries because they are both interesting. I choose Haiti because I was curious to whether Haiti was always corrupt or was it due to current disaster. While researching I realized that Haiti has been in the same for a long time. After being oppressed by their oppressor for over 20 years they don’t same to be going forward but rather they seems to be going backward year after year. Brazil was also oppressed but managed to overcome their oppressor after gaining their independence.

  • Give an overview of your process

My process on my benchmark was pretty much successful, the problem I faced was the way in which I was to present my project. I had a lot of things in mind that I wanted to do but none really work when I try putting the finishing touch together. But in the end I decided to present my project using info graphics.

  • Reflect upon the 5point framework. Was it straightforward, easy, difficult, perplexing, etc.

I found the five-point framework really helpful and straightforward. It never occurred to me that using the five-point framework let you see and view the world in a whole different light. After doing this project, now every time I come across a country or a state I use the five-point framework to evaluate things.

  • If you could change one thing about your product, what would it be and why?

If I could change one thing about my product it would be my presentation because even though I’ve turn in my project I’m still not excited about my overall visuals it could have been much better.

  • Other thoughts, reflections, feedback.

I really like this project because I was able to do things the way in which I never r seen it before. The one thing I feel could be change is the time frame. There were a lot of things going on but not enough time to do the work. I hope you take my thoughts into consideration.

Egypt & Kenya

Posted by James Seward in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, April 1, 2011 at 8:32 pm

HEre is my project.

My countries were Egypt and Kenya. Egypt is Sub Saharan Africa while the other, the middle east.  Choosing my countries and Finding the information was the easiest part. I found multiple websites that had tons of information.  The hardest part was putting the information in a presentable form.  It was difficult to choose a way to represent the data and put it in a way that made it worth seeing.  I would spend more time making it more presentable if i could.  I wanted to do something extra but didnt have the time.

I had picked Egypt and the Philippines for my assignment because they were honestly chosen at random. My assignment isn't really pretty or interesting, but I had to get something in. Anyway, while doing the assignment I learned that despite the areas being completely different biomes, they were a lot alike when it came to the 5 point framework. The only major difference between them was their climate change. The Philippines hasn't seen much of a drastic change to their climate, compared to Egypt. However there were a lot of similarities that showed that the seemingly opposite countries aren't as different then they appear.

Collapsibility Reflection

Posted by Robert Glynn in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 10:34 am

The countries that I selected were Costa Rica and Luxembourg. Both are countries that I believe will not collapse. I didn't know they both had two extremes though. Costa Rica is the most green planet on the planet, and Luxembourg has the largest carbon footprint. It was a nice realization and made the process of comparing them a little easier too.

The five point framework was fine. Climate and environment were a little difficult to distinguish between. Also, this system gives equal weight to each section, when in reality, I think that some might be more important than others and should hold more weight.

I like my final product, but I think if I could go to these countries and visit them (or visit them again) and take my own pictures with this project in mind, I could come up with a lot more useful graphic images.
