Describe a day in the life

Posted by Diana Laufenberg in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 2:33 pm
For the average 12 yo (boy or girl, you pick) in your country that you focused on last week... what is the average day like.

Make a visualization of the day.. you can timeline it with pix, do something more creative.

But by the end of class on Tuesday you should have a representation of that day... with regard to education and health at a minimum... feel free to include more factors and indicators. Provide at least 5 CITED sources to your creation.

When you are done, link to it on SLA.org blogger - SLATE. Double check that your link works. In addition to the link, reflect on... how does this life compare that that of yours when you were 12? What was most surprising about your findings? What parts were expected? What do you think that 12yo's life will be like when they are 40? Describe it... what will have changed, what will have stayed the same?

1.      Liberty Bell
According to the National Park Service website; in the 1800s, the liberty bell traveled around the country to expositions and fairs to help heal the divisions of the civil war. It reminded Americans of their earlier days when they fought and worked together for independence. It represents how we got our independence and therefore the influence of the colonies from Britain.

3.      Save the date

He predicted judgment days on May 21 2011 and his prediction went all over the world causing a tremendous fear in different countries. Its amazing how this particular person could convince millions of people that the end of the world was on may 21 (2011) Christianity is the dominant religion in the city of Philadelphia and that’s probably why we believed him.

4.      Puerto Rico Parade

The parade most of the time begins at 12 noon at 16th street and john F. Kennedy Boulevard. The entire Latino community gathers this day to celebrate Latino/Puerto Rican culture. Over the past of the years, Latino population has increase in Philadelphia and this is shown every year at the Puerto Rican parade with more than 5,000 people in attendance.

5.      Science Leadership Academy
This school is able to cross distance boundaries to get a better understanding of education. Educon hosted by the Science Leadership Academy in Philly is a both a conference and a conversation about the future of school.  Educon is a great way of bringing people from  all over to gather together and talk about the future of school.

6.      Tierras Colombianas
this restaurant is bring the best of the Latino gastronomy together. Here you will be able to find the most delightful Latino/Caribbean dishes. It also has a wonderful selection of quality domestic and international wines. This restaurant brings a little bit of the Latino food to Philly.

7.      American Jewish

8.      Mural-ethnicities : Credit: ©2005 City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program/Eliseo Silva, Photo © JackRamsdale.com

Many different ethnicities background can be found at Spruance and that’s why the school requested a mural about the theme of immigration. This mural represents the different type of background that can be found at not only this school in particular, but instead the entire city of Philadelphia. According to metropolitan policy program, metropolitan Philadelphia has the largest and fastest growing immigrant population, which in 2008 was standing at over 500,000 comprising 9 percent of the total population.

9.      Cleopatra

Through Cleopatra we will be able to comprehend and analyze an entire different culture and draw our conclusions about the wise decisions and the thoughts that possibly crossed Cleopatra’s mind at some point.

10.  Circle of hands
the diverse yet converging hands symbolize the community's commitment to ending racial division. This mural was created after racial violence in the Gray's Ferry neighborhood. This mural represents the great amount of diversity backgrounds that can be found in the city of Philadelphia.

reflection:
Every single aspect of this project was challenging. It was hard to connect and explain why a picture represents globalization in Philadelphia. It was difficult to find pictures that were appropriate for this project. It was challenging overall.

One of the things that I was scare of was to not be able to find/collect enough images and it was became reality. I didn’t have enough images and if I had images I couldn’t see the connection between that particular image and globalization in Philadelphia
image # 6 is my favorite one. It’s a picture of a Latino restaurant, in my opinion one of the best restaurants for Latino food.  This is my favorite image because the restaurant represents and reflects the increase of the Latino community in Philadelphia. Before, there weren’t as many Latinos in Philadelphia as there is now, and it reflects in the growth of this restaurant. When they first started it was a small restaurant with a couple of tables, now they have three “Tierras Colombianas” around the city.

Q4 glblzn benchmark

Posted by Sophia Moreno in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 12:28 am

So "endeth" the final history benchmark I will ever do at SLA.  It's been a long four years. I'd say this project was difficult in its entirety.  It was hard to pick 10 adequate Philadelphia representations of globalization.  Some of the things we thought worked didn't count.  However the hardest part was probably getting all the pictures.  It was a bit aggravating to travel all around the city to take photos, and took up time.   The first day I just wandered in the direction of China-town, hoping to just snap away as many workable pictures as possible.  I hadn't yet figured out each example I wanted to use, but still wanted to utilize the photography day.  After that I figured out what was left and got those independently.   My favorite photo is probably the one of the reading terminal market, not for historical reasons or picture aesthetics, but because that place has ridiculously good food and I have been going since I was a little kid.  I think globalization is present in philadelphia, but not always in obvious photographable ways, but in ideas.  However it is an urban area, so the globalizations factors are pretty prominent.  You could probably see evidence in any city, though prominence may vary based on location (wall-street, white house, gayborhood...)  Cities have always been cultural crossroads, and areas of attractions to other countries.

Globalization Q4 Benchmark: Photo Essay

Posted by Devon Thomas in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 12:14 am

This Project was interesting to me, it wasn't too difficult to complete after I knew what pictures I needed, the hardest part was finding things to take pictures of. I had a really hard time taking the pictures of the right buildings, and artifacts, and trying to make it interesting all at the same time. I selected the images by narrowing down which building, or idea could be used for certain topics, and then finding that location and taking a picture of it. My favorite image on this photo essay would have to be the photo of the Chinatown Arch, because although it is faded in my project, it was the coolest picture I used and looks really interesting. I feel as though if I knew what I was looking for, and we had talked more in class about where to find some things that relate to each topic this project would have been a lot more about learning how they work into globalization, and less about what picture goes with which topic. In Philadelphia, I think that Globalization is less prevelent than in other cities such as New York and Los Angeles because those cities get a lot more immigration, and new businesses than we do, they are better positioned for more prevalent globalization to occur.

Globalization Q4BM

Globalization BM

The project itself seemed to pose quite a challenge when it came to finding Globalization within Philadelphia. Although, I did enjoy it somewhat when it came to traveling around town and snapping photos of the images. Some conflicts did arise with when you have to find relations and try to explain them without much bulk in content to the photo and Globalization. I had to choose images that I was able to get access to, things that were actually in town. Out of all of them, my favorite image would have to be the ones in Chinatown. Not only did they have depths in some of the photos but I enjoy that place the most since it's got most of what I enjoy. But I think Globalization isn't prevalent in Philadelphia, it's not as strong as it can be since there are other cultures clashing at the same time with the people itself.

Marshall Johnston's Benchmark

Posted by Marshall Johnston in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 10:50 pm

My Benchmark

The most difficult part of this project was finding data about individual aspects of Philadelphia and finding a way to incorporate those stats into the paragraphs. All of the other parts were simple once you stopped worrying about how you were going to get them done and actually started doing them. My first step in getting my pictures was going topic by topic and thinking of something in center city/my neighborhood that involved the topic. Then all I had to do was go out and take pictures of whatever it was. My favorite image is the picture of our school because it's a bangin' picture, but that isn't the image that best encapsulates the effects of globalization in Philadelphia. I do the best job of showing/explaining the effects of globalization in Philadelphia with my image of the GAP bag. Even though I didn't go too deep in depth on the topic, I still wrote more information about that topic than any other mainly because that's the issue I know about more than any topic in the world. Globalization is naturally more prevalent in large cities than in small communities, so there is evidence of it everywhere in Philadelphia. When comparing Philadelphia to the other large cities in the United States, I think that we are all pretty much on the same scale in terms of how prevalent it is.

p.s. I apologize for the crap I turned in, I just figured it was better than nothing.

Finding the images and coming up with the ideas to tie them together with globalization was by the hardest part of the project the second hardest part was trying to locate the places I wanted to go to after I found them on the internet. My process of selecting photos was the easiest part I just went to Chinatown and started taking random pictures the only hard about that was finding places like the school. My favorite image is the culture picture, mainly because it was food and I got to eat the food after I took the picture. Philadelphia could use a little more evidence of globalization, all we is Chinatown and little Italy, I think it could be better if there was more sign of different cultures all over the city.

What did you find most challenging about this project?
Actually connecting the various globalization topics to things in Philadelphia.

How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I wandered around the city on the hottest day ever with 3 other students and took pictures of the appropriate topics.

Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
The Picture Of the archway entrance to China Town. It stands as a literal entrance to an entire culture.

How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?
I would say it is extremely prevalent in some areas and completely dry in others. Some parts of the city are entirely self dedicated while others are cultural hubs.

GLobalization in Philadelphia

Posted by Robert Glynn in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 12:07 pm

This is the link to my benchmark.

The most challenging part of this project was the collection of images. It takes a lot of thought ahead of time to go out and plan it and make it to all the places I needed to go. I used the day that the power went out to collect most of my images. It went well, I just wish I had gotten more. My favorite image is the one of the reading terminal. I like it because I like the reading terminal and buying things there, so being able to use that in my project was enjoyable. Globalization is pretty prevalent in Philadelphia, especially with China town and all of the diverse cultural places we have available to us in the city. I assume most cities are similar to ours, but in rural places there would be much less evidence of globalization.

Globalization in Philadelphia-Emily Maggiano

This is my benchmark

When working on this benchmark the thing that I found to be most challenging was finding and taking pictures that pertained to the topics that I wanted to focus on. Going around the city trying to find things that are all over the world and not just in Philly was probably the hardest thing for me to do.
When I ventured out to take pictures, I started at the places closest to school...like the flags on the parkway, Mütter Museum, Museum of Natural Sciences etc. After I got those I did some research and then headed to China Town, since I was able to get a lot of my pictures from there alone. Since I broke all my cameras I had to take most of the pictures with my phone and that made the process a lot more challenging then I thought it was going to be.
Out of all 10 pictures that I took, I think my favorite would have to be the flags on the parkway I think that the parkway flags came out really nice and it shows a lot about Philadelphia, not only did I get most of the flags in the picture but I also got William Penn. It was also the first picture and the first topic that I wrote my information on. So for those reasons, that is my favorite picture.
After being in this globalization class, I'm able to look at my different surroundings and see the evidence of globalization all around me. I'm sure there is a lot more places and things that have or show evidence of globalization, I just have to take my time and really look. But for just being one city, I think Philadelphia shows a lot of good effects and evidence of globalization.

Q4 Globalization Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Ralen Robinson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 9:12 am

During the fourth quarter of globalization we had to depict the themes of globalization thus far with pictures from our society. The most challenging aspect of this was connecting things back to globalization as a whole. It was hard trying to justify how this interconnects with the outside world. In having this trouble I had to map out the different themes & places I wanted to go. For example the theme security I went to 30th street station where it services a lot of diverse people. My favorite picture out of the entire project is the security picture of the officer & his dog patrolling the station. It shows security at its finest while protecting the good people of Philadelphia and people from other countries. Ultimately globalization is very evident in the city of brotherly love there's an abundance of cultures, religion and much more that are represented in the city. Mostly every corner you look there's adversity on a greater scale.
