Globalization 4th Quarter Benchmark

Big Idea: Evidence of globalization is everywhere in our day-to-day activities.  All around us, the influences of global factors drive decisions, impressions and understanding.  In order to internalize this influence and impact, we look to our familiar surroundings for images that represent the different topics and themes we study in Globalization.

Basics:

  • Take 10 original photos that represent a different aspect of the globalization curriculum – reference the course outline for a list of the themes and concepts
  • For each of the images, write at least two paragraphs that explain the connections between the image and the globalization theme.  These paragraphs need to draw clear connections between the theme, Philadelphia and reputable resources.
  • A 10 source bibliography (not annotated) MLA format
  • Choose a presentation tool that best represents your ideas (this are just a few ideas, there are many, many more)
    • o    http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp?gclid=COevzt3KrqECFQmU7QodCVMOAQ
o    Keynote has some great templates for creating an essay with audio and text
      o    http://www.joggle.com/
        •    with this tool you can just record your analysis if you like, pretty easy to use.
      o    http://photopeach.com/
      o    Google Presentation
      o    Here http://inmotion.magnumphotos.com/
        •    great site that has some of the best photo essays I have ever seen. Also we can use Imovie to make slide shows as well if people don't want to learn a new program.

  • Post a link to your work on sla.org

Suggested Use of Time in Class:

Week One:  Brainstorm a list of images/scenes that you would like to capture and tie each of those to a theme from the Globalization course outline.

Week Two: Research each of the themes, looking for a reputable source to support the ideas you would like to represent in each of the different images and corresponding paragraphs.  When you write your paragraphs, you should specifically cite these sources in the paragraphs.

Week Three: Write your paragraphs and complete your bibliography, pull together the images, paragraphs and bibliography into a published format.

Outside of class homework: Collect images and finalize any requirements not finished in class.

Example:

The demographic shift within Alma Center, WI is best exemplified by these side by side signs.  Over the past 20 years, the number of Spanish speaking immigrants has grown dramatically in this small, rural farming town.  Interestingly the long settled families of this area match many of the cultural and societal norms of the new immigrants settling in the area with a focus on religion and families.  Prior to the recent migration of Latino immigrants, the predominant cultural backgrounds were from Northern Europe.

Immigrant migration into small farming communities was best explained in this article by …. (you get the picture)

Collapse Reflection

Posted by John Derry in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 12:31 pm

The 2 countries I focused on were Saudi Arabia and Papua New Guinea. There was an explanation for why they were chosen but for nothing a want to learn about to different countries. The process consisted of researching both countries. The research didn't take long but was pretty tedious. The hardest part of project was picking a design. At first, I wanted to do an Imovie but it was starting to take to long. Then I tried a website but then again it became too difficult. Finally I decided to do a google slideshow.
The 5 point frame work was kind of easy. The hardest part was just reflecting on what each factor actually meant. The hardest one was climate change. It was very hard to find information about hostile neighbors. A solution could have been being more thorough with my research.
If I could change one thing I would of tried to put more effort into my project. Eventually I was attacked by a force called senior slacking. Eventually my mindset became just get the project done hopefully get a C and pass for the quarter. If I had the fortitude to try to achieve make the project better it would have been a much better project.

Harrison Talese-Rhodes' Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Harrison Talese-Rhodes in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:10 am

For my Q3 Collapse'ability benchmark, I focused on Australia and Myanmar.

Beginning this benchmark was very difficult for me. When I finally started, however, my strategy was to write a section for each of the 5 pieces of framework for each country separately, and then combine the sections in a fashionable fashion and add a paragraph or so of comparing and contrasting. I then added pictures to each. This strategy worked well because, as I predicted, once I found some interesting leads in my research, each of the sections sort of developed themselves.

The 5 point framework cut my work out for me for the most part, but some of the sections were difficult to complete because the country didn't really have anything of note to say in certain categories. Even this was a minor problem because all I had to do for those was write a paragraph on why that factor wasn't relevant for the country and then give it a 10/10.

If I could add something to my final product, it would be better organization and cross-analyzing of both countries. It was difficult to put text that I wrote in text edit into pages and organize it with pictures because of formatting troubles. Once I got it all in, I didn't want to disturb it, so I held off from comparing and contrasting too much.

Benchmark Reflection!

Posted by Christine Walden in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 12:06 am

For my benchmark, I chose to compare New Zealand and Brazil. In order to fulfill the requirements of the project, I needed to research each of the five provided components of collapsibility for both countries, assign a score, and give my reasoning. I chose to research the five points for each country individually, focusing my investigation on one nation at any given time. I found this approach terribly helpful, particularly in the initial stagesl because it allowed me to acquaint myself with the country while also providing me the opportunity to throw in fun, relevant tidbits I happened upon while looking the nation.
While completing my benchmark, one thing I found wonderfully helpful was the five point framework. It created a relatively open structure around which to build my project. It was just grand! However, I cannot highlight only the good things… there are things I would have liked to change about my project, namely its submission time. I once again turned in this benchmark late which I find has sullied the whole process for me. I wish, if given an opportunity to do this project again, I would have the good sense to finish it on time.
