Globalization 4th Quarter Benchmark

Big Idea: Evidence of globalization is everywhere in our day-to-day activities.  All around us, the influences of global factors drive decisions, impressions and understanding.  In order to internalize this influence and impact, we look to our familiar surroundings for images that represent the different topics and themes we study in Globalization.


Basics:

  • Take 10 original photos that represent a different aspect of the globalization curriculum – reference the course outline for a list of the themes and concepts
  • For each of the images, write at least two paragraphs that explain the connections between the image and the globalization theme.  These paragraphs need to draw clear connections between the theme, Philadelphia and reputable resources.
  • A 10 source bibliography (not annotated) MLA format
  • Choose a presentation tool that best represents your ideas (this are just a few ideas, there are many, many more)

Suggested Use of Time in Class:


Week One:  Brainstorm a list of images/scenes that you would like to capture and tie each of those to a theme from the Globalization course outline.


Week Two: Research each of the themes, looking for a reputable source to support the ideas you would like to represent in each of the different images and corresponding paragraphs.  When you write your paragraphs, you should specifically cite these sources in the paragraphs.


Week Three: Write your paragraphs and complete your bibliography, pull together the images, paragraphs and bibliography into a published format.


Outside of class homework: Collect images and finalize any requirements not finished in class.

The demographic shift within Alma Center, WI is best exemplified by these side by side signs.  Over the past 20 years, the number of Spanish speaking immigrants has grown dramatically in this small, rural farming town.  Interestingly the long settled families of this area match many of the cultural and societal norms of the new immigrants settling in the area with a focus on religion and families.  Prior to the recent migration of Latino immigrants, the predominant cultural backgrounds were from Northern Europe.

​Here it is!

The most difficult part of this project was finding concrete examples of vague and intangible forms of globalization, such as "energy" or "human rights." Ultimately, I was able to make a list of things to photograph, and biked all around the city taking pictures. My favorite picture is the one of the Lukoil gas station, because it's such a pedestrian sight and yet such a perfect example of globalization through trade, not to mention an illustration of recent US-Russia relations. I think globalization is ubiquitous in Philadelphia. Virtually all technology is made overseas. Clothes are almost always from Asia, and it's necessary to make an extra effort to find American-made products. I think globalization is prevalent throughout the United States, but perhaps less so in land-locked states, who don't have immediate access to trade and travelers from overseas.

Here is my 4th Quarter Benchmark. 

  • What did you find most challenging about this project? Choosing what to take pictures of was definitely the most challenging part to me. 
  • How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images? Some of the were pre-thought out, others just came to when I was about and about. 
  • Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate. My favorite image had to be the one of the Italian Fiat I took because I was really lucky to get a shot of it when they are still so rare and it was perfect for what I wanted to talk about since I love cars. 
  • How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not? I think that Globalization is very prevalent in Philadelphia and other large cities because with large cities, it's like there is one blueprint for success. And each large city around the world contributes a little bit to it. But they all follow it so they are taking pieces of each other

Reflection:
The most challenging thing about this project was coming up with things that I could easily find in Philadelphia that could represent the different aspects of globalization. Some of them were not all that hard to think of, but others were very hard. I first thought that I would just walk around the city taking pictures of things that I saw. I thought that as I saw things, ideas would come to me and I would take a picture. This method did not work when I went about walking around. I then sat down and thought of ideas for pictures that I could take in my head and where I could take them. This method worked a lot better. I think that my favorite image is the one of the solar panels. Although it is kind of hard to see them in the picture, they are good for representing that aspect of globalization which is environment and energy. I took the picture of my neighbor's roof because his house is powered by solar panels. I think that Philadelphia shows an average amount of evidence for globalization compared to other cities. As I said in my project, I think that immigration is the most important element of globalization so probably cities that have a lot of immigrants are what show evidence of globalization the most. Probably cities like San Diego or Los Angeles which have a lot of Mexican immigrants, or Boston which has a lot of Irish immigrants.

Reflection
The most challenging part of this project, by far, was finding a connection between the themes of this class and places in Philadelphia.  Although we live in a very diverse city, examples of globalization are not as evident as one might imagine.  It took a lot of creative thinking to complete this benchmark.  

Most of my pictures required a special trip, whether it was to the Philadelphia Zoo or to Chinatown.  However, I was able to take two of them while I was in the city for other reasons.  GlaxoSmithKline and the flags that line the Parkway are on an average day's route, so those picture were easily to take.  My favorite picture is the one taken in Malawi, in front of a school constructed by buildOn and the local village.  It perfectly connects to the globalization of education and brings back wonderful memories of my trip last year. 

While some examples of globalization are evident in Philadelphia, certain topics, such as international politics and security, are much more difficult.  In cities with higher immigrant populations, like New York, or cities with an international focus (i.e. Washington, DC) globalization would be easier to evidence.

Reflections
In all honesty, this was one of the worst projects I have ever done. There are many excuses as of why? Maybe it was the idea of the me not being motivated to do work or plain and simple I'm ready to graduate. It could simply be that I can accept getting a C this quarter and having a B overall. The challenging part was actually completing the project. With aspirations of getting anything above a zero, I think I hardly can say I accomplished that goal. I only did 3/10 for pictures and my facts are no where near as strong as I would like them to be. I dont really have a favorite part because me not putting any effort forth in completing this project. My favorite image was getting the religion and showing which cultures come at different times. This was pretty unique and something I felt was interested. I could say may evidence does help to lean my opinion in either way because I did not find enough research to have a valid opinon on this topic.

Reflection

The thing I found most challenging was finding the link to support what I had written in my two paragraphs. Most of my paragraphs were opinionated or based on knowledge I already knew, so finding the correct source I felt was hard because it was not needed. For some of my topics the challenging part was even writing  two paragraphs. The steps to collecting and selecting my images started with picking my topics. I first picked the 10 topics I knew would be easy to describe and most convenient for my to take pictures of. Then I picked the pictures that best fit and took distance into consideration, I tried to keep the pictures not necessarily just in my neighborhood but places that I spend time at. My favorite image is the picture of the recycling and trash bins on South St. This is my favorite picture because going green is at this point one of the most important things happening globally, and to see it in Philadelphia means that progress is happening. I also like the fact that you can tell these are located on major tour city in Philadelphia because they are artistic.  Globalization in Philadelphia is evident however when being compared to larger cities they have much more evidence with certain categories.  With Philadelphia you have to look much deeper to understand what true globalization is within the certain things we see. However cities everywhere are influenced global by culture and religion. These are topics that help shape the cities we live in today.

My Benchmark

Reflection:
    The most challenging thing about this project was finding the 10 topics, and finding something in the city that would relate to them without being redundant. For example with Security and terrorism, even though I only did security, if i was going to do them both there was a challenge of how i could differ the two. So the way I went about collecting the photos that I did take was discussing, and brainstorming with my peers at my table. We saw what we all had in mind, the differences, similarities and if it was the same how we could make them different. WIth our collaboration is made things a lot less difficult.
    Among all of the images that I took I think it may be the photo of the Comcast center. I used it for the topic of energy since the building is "green". However in it you can see the second tallest building in the city, a building if I'm not mistaken also just went "green". With that being just one of the images I found it that Philadelphia has a lot of evidence of globalization, everyone is just blind, I was one of them before this project. A lot things in Philadelphia is from Philadelphia, and also benifets the rest of the world.

Here i my Benchmark
 1. What did you find most challenging about this project?

The most challenging part about this project was the part with writing how the image dealt with globalization and how it affected our daily life. I mean for most of them it was easy, but for certain parts like politics was harder than science and technology. 

2. How did you go about collecting the images or selecting the images?
I went about how the benchmark description went, you would research the topics then think about topics in Philadelphia and I would take pictures for example, I remember researching security and terrorism and I thought about some very important places in Philadelphia and what would need the most security and why and I thought of 30th street and how much security they might need in case of a terrorist attack.

3. Which image is your favorite? Why? Elaborate.
I think I enjoyed the Culture picture for my picture. It was the stereotypical things, but I was looking around my room noticing a lot of the name brand things I own and how well I tried to fit into societies expectations and how I am in a statistic in a globalization topic without really thinking about it. 

4. How prevalent is the evidence of globalization in Philadelphia? Do you think it is more or less so (evident) than in other large cities in the US? Why Why not?
I feel like in today's society it is big and head on. If I had no idea what globalization was then I wouldn't notice it. I don't think that it would be any different then any other city because we all face the same crisis. I do think that it is hidden in Philadelphia then compared to New York, but it's still present.
