Identity Without Words

Posted by Jamilah Woodards in English 3 - Block - E on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 5:33 am

My initial goals for this podcast consisted of me interviewing three females of different ages and races on my specific topic of identity. That didn't exactly happen. I ended up with one female as well as getting the perspective from my 19 year old brother. With me switching up my interviewees, I also had to switch up my approach. My new goal was to ask the both of them similar questions and compare/contrast their answers.

Working on this project was interesting. It was very tedious and time consuming. Interviewing was the easy part. The more difficult part was editing and switching up my entire podcast. Since I interviewed two people, that was two people to edit, trim, and create interesting content. I had to move so much around while editing since the two were interview at different times.

Identity and Belonging Podcast

My goals for this podcast was to interview someone who had a story to tell, and would love to talk about themselves for a while. When I chose my interviewee because he is an immigrant from Spain, and he is also homosexual. I asked him about how this played a role on figuring out how he fit into society here in America as someone who is not born here or is of the minority.

When completing my assignment, the interview went extraordinarily well. I was obviously surprised by all the stories he had to offer, and the most difficult part of the assignment was choosing the audio clips that would make it into the final and the ones that would get deleted. It was hard to throw away such amazing audio footage because it seemed as if everything I had was absolutely amazing.

Relationships- Podcast

Posted by Ashlye Fitzmaurice in English 3 - Block - E on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at 4:06 pm

After writing my Advance Essay #3, I wasn't really sure who I wanted to interview or what to discuss in my podcast. My goal was to interview someone who I can connect with and take on a different or the same view on a topic. Either way, I wanted to get the feel and understand their identity of belonging.
At first, I interviewed my older sister. She drifted the conversation to what it is like being the oldest child and the responsibilities of being one. In the end, I found that I was not really satisfied with the recording because (1) she was driving, (2) the radio was on, and (3) I did not feel like the message was clear on identity nor belonging. So one day, my best friend happened to be over and she was telling me all kinds of stories from her family, to friends, and being stressed overall. So, I knew it was the perfect timing to do my podcast!
Below is the conversation of how her past relationship or generally how strong love can affect a person and their identity. I do have to say, working to edit and put everything together was not an easy job. I used Garageband on my MacBook to edit the piece and on the day it was due, my work was unsaved and all my work was gone. Luckily, I got it done and to be honest, this is not the best but this the best that can be done compared to the original piece. Also, I literally tried every background music that would go along with my podcast, but it just sounded weird to me. I think it makes it too much if I were to add in music or sound effects. So I hope you guys understand. With that being said, I hope you enjoy!

Podcast Michael Thayres

Podcast (1)
My main goal with this podcast is to show how someones outlook can change with the experiences they have, and how this impacts identity. My brother who has had his fair share of setbacks at one point had a pretty optimistic view on life, but now it's more realistic. He dreams less, just wants to get to a point where he's independent. The work was actually getting him to say something interesting during the recording, which was more difficult than I thought it would be.

I definitely learned a little bit about what it's like to deal with interviews and try and get interesting material from people. Since my brother was very indifferent about his answers (and I was also interrupted by my cat more than once) it was hard to get a story arc, or even anything interesting at all from him. He seemed like he just didn't have much thought at all put into the topic. So that's kind of the tone of the podcast. He's indifferent, and this is likely due to how his experiences changed his identity, whether he acknowledges that or not.

Identity and Belonging Podcast

Posted by Kai Burton in English 3 - Block - E on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 8:07 pm

My goals for the project, originally, was to have a very strong and meaningful piece about identity and how it can be misinterpreted, turned around and downright painful. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the hard hitting piece that I wanted. Instead I turned to my parents, I wanted to explore how identity is shaped in your early life and how that leads to a mutual generational identity. My parents grew up in vastly different communities and economic groups, but were still able to learn the same values and morals. To me that was fascinating and I wanted to know more about it.

The process of making this podcast was very long and frustrating. As I mentioned in my previous podcast, it took a while for me to get the footage for my podcast. After I got my footage, I had to cut it down to ten minutes. Initially it seemed like it would be hard to do but as I got through the logging process I realized that a lot of the conversation wasn't relevant or usable. In the end I was had less than 8 minutes of usable footage. The last step was adding in music which was the easiest part. In the end I'm glad we did this project, although I wish I had more time, I like the podcast making part.

Black Boy White School

Eric E Stewart Francis Bacon
The goal of my podcast was to learn more about my brothers experience as a young black boy at a private school. Through this,I wanted to silently guide him to talking about how that shaped his identity and what he ended up being exposed to as a result of his unique experience. A lot of my podcast was us making fun of each other, so I had to work really hard to make the transitions as smooth as possible between ideas, however you'll still hear the unnatural break or jump in my podcast.

What went well was the interview, as I knew it would. He was open, jovial, and projected his voice in a way that didn't require any editing. My only struggle was trying to export the recording as i'd done it on Garageband and the file would convert for whatever reason. However, through trial and error, I figured out I was pressing the wrong button and just edited and exported on Garageband, much easier than Soundtrap. I learned to look into the apps I use for recording to avoid situations like this again

Jake's Podcast: Family and Identity

Posted by Jacob Norman in English 3 - Block - E on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 6:09 pm

My goal for this podcast was to find the relationship between a family's upbringing and identity. I interviewed my mother Angela Allen on what she remembers about her family. I had already known that my mother had a rough relationship with her father and mother on different opinions. I also interviewed my mother on what her life was like when she was, briefly, shunned by her family when she came out as gay.

My experience with this project was, overall, good one. The interviewing went well, but I think in the next podcast project I have I will use a program other than Soundtrap for editing. From this project I learned that I need to improve on my interviewing skills, not in responding to questions but in sounding more engaged and asking more thought provoking questions. I also learned that it is not uncommon for people to create their own identity.

Attempting to see beyond the white curtain: The Podcast

Posted by Anastasia Petropoulos in English 3 - Block - E on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 5:05 pm

The idea for this project was inspired by Indee's topic of choice, being biracial.  Once I heard her discussing what she was going to write about an outline for my own paper began to form in my mind.  Race is a topic I have developed an intense passion for.  Yet, as a majority I always question my place in the discussion.  I figured that by studying the topic intently it would help me come to grips with my inner conflict. Deciding to go through with my topic was hard for me though, because I feared the possible reactions that would follow the publishing of my paper on slate.  My passion for the subject overcame my fear. I determined that my best product would come only if I was truly invested in the topic .
There were many factor that contributed to the stable process of writing my paper. The fact that I had interest on my topic compelled me to dig deep into the realm of research using many videos as well as a documentary as resources. Therefore I had much proof to back up the statements I made within my writing. The only art of the process I found difficult was sitting down to write the paper. I kept returning to pages of research attempting to collect more evidence. I was trying to create a statement that was carefully worded, attempting to be as fair-minded as possible. In the end I learned that in order to have a conversation about race there must be respect given from all sides as well as an understanding and honesty of the past and present. The white race as a whole must remove the veil from their eyes and recognize that they are in a majority position, and with that, the understanding that minorities lead a different experience.

See Your Skin Podcast

Posted by Ona Brown in English 3 - Block - E on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 3:10 pm

During my writing process I explored the idea of belonging. After watching several  videos and reading excerpts that described how we find our identity. It helped me to examine bigger ideas such as the process of building our identity and how many factors go into the destruction of our identity. But I’ve came to the conclusion that our identity can’t be destructed unless we allow it to be. Our identity can be reconstructed, because throughout life we will have different encounters that help us shape and form our identity. Another idea that stuck out to me during my research was that we do form our identity based off of others people projections, because when we come into this world we are told things and we base our own projections on their own.

I’m very happy with the outcome of my essay and podcast. I was able to interview my family members and understand their perspective on belonging and forming our identity. In the future I want to be comfortable with educating people about identity and I also want to stay comfortable in my own skin and not rely on the presence of others.

Identity And Belonging Podcast

Posted by Sianneh Vesslee in English 3 - Block - E on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 2:13 pm

So My goal for this podcast was to be able to relate heroes to identity and how heroes can have impact on them. I thought that getting an interview from both of my parents. I wanted to see how their experience with the people that they considered their heroes impacted them overall. I also wanted to make sure I had said my part for this topic and what I had learned from this experience as a whole
What I had found that was really interesting and enjoyable, would have to be the interviews that I had done with my parents. They had some interesting points, and it had given me new ideas on how to approach this podcast. It was really cool, not to mention I felt like I got a chance to learn more about my parents. The most difficult part of this project would have to be editing. I severely underestimated the amount of work that I had to put in to make the final podcast really good. However, I would still say that it was worth it.
