Ms. Pahomov hates it when strangers ask her “what book are you teaching in your English class right now?” Usually it means they want to just talk about what they liked to read (or not) in high school. When she was in high school, people told her she was a “fast reader,” and that was a bad thing for her, because she often read too quickly and missed the details. There are a lot of books she likes better now that she slowed down when reading, like “The Great Gatsby,” which she has probably read ten times at this point, each year when she teaches it. She is proud of the fact that she has the stamina for long books, but is more likely to carry around something that is 200 pages or less in her backpack.

One of the great sadnesses of her school year is that she uses so much of her brain to read and respond to student work that she has limited capacity to read on her own. She also recently discovered that she is old enough to have read books and COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN what they are about. Take, for example, the novel “Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut. She is certain she read it as a teen, but a student asked her about the plot recently and she couldn’t remember a thing. She is a little bit worried that this represents the rest of her life: forgetting things and having to go back to them.

One of her great joys of the school year is when she gets to read alongside her students in class. Her plan is to re-read “Cat’s Cradle” as soon as she finishes “Bone” by Fae Myenne Ng. The hardest time for her to read is on a plane or train. She always tells herself that she will, but she’d much rather listen to music and look out the window. She is a little bit ashamed of the fact that she never reads in German anymore, although she can. Never enough time!

Matt's Reading Profile

Matt’s happy place when reading is at home, at his own desk. Uusally it’s quiet, but listening to music helps him as well. When it’s loud though, he almost can’t read anything because he can’t concentrate. He wishes he was a reader with a large vocabulary, but because he’s lazy it’s holding him back. His favorite genre is business, and his least favorite is young adult. If he was alone on a desert island, he would want to take the book The Psychopath Inside. His favourite book was, and still is, Green Eggs and Ham.

Reading Profile: Kali

When reading, Kali doesn’t like silence or a cold temperature, it makes it harder for her to concentrate on her book, and being tired or preoccupied makes it worse. Her ideal environment would be warm with white noise, and she would prefer to have all of her work done first.

While she often enjoys what she reads, some books grate on her nerves. Go Ask Alice, is a pretty good example of a book she hated. She found it dry, and the ending didn’t satisfy her. She had to read it through to the end for English last year, but she would have probably dropped the book sooner if she could.

When she gets to it, she does enjoy reading. She has a tendency to just forget to keep reading a book, and is somewhat ashamed of that. To improve herself as a reader, she would like to be able to persevere through something she isn’t fond of, or just any book in general.

Lotus, is the ultimate reader. You can find her curled up in her room, under her covers with a cup tea when she reads! She likes to be comfortable when diving into a good book. Even though she does not read books by Dr. Seuss anymore, she still loves him and some of the classics like “Green Eggs and Ham”. Right now, Lotus is reading a book by Elena Ferrante called “My Brilliant Friend”, in which she describes the book to be someone who is down to earth, skeptical, naive and a little bit childish. On the other hand, you wouldn’t find Lotus reading her book if there is a lot on her mind or there are other stimulants such as a loud t.v. Coming to an end to our interview, I asked, “What genre would your mental state be right now?”, in which she replied saying she was tired and sick, so she would be a weird, slow moving horror story. Interesting combo! Happy reading Lotus!

This is Hadleigh. She's a reader. Her favorite genre is Realistic Fiction, as it isn't super realistic but not far fetched and relatable to her life. If Hadleigh was only able to choose one book for the rest of her life, she wouldn't be able to choose as she says she would get bored easily. Her reading Happy place is the Beach, as it is relaxing and peaceful, and there's not much else to do. Hadleigh's reading weakness is that she gets distracted easily.

If Hadleigh could throw one book out the window, it would be The Catcher and the Rye by J.D> Salinger (pictured above). She says that the book is well written and the characters are well crafted, however they are very frustrating at times. Moving on to more positive things, a childhood book of hers that she still enjoys to this day is Wonder by Raquel J. Palacio. Hadleigh praised the book for being nicely written and full of life lesson that taught her a lot. She learned to be more open minded from the "Moving and inspiring" novel.
