Today book club was more interesting. We talked more about Irene and Clare's relationship because it was becoming more interesting. We found songs that pretty much summed Irene and Clare's relationship. We also found songs that summed up Irene and her husband, Brian.

Book club Episode #2

What we have read so far is that Cheryl has started hiking on the PCT but has already come across many obstacles, challenges and has taken a lot of risks to confront her fear of the hike. One way she confronted her fear of the hike was by getting into a car with two grown men. One of the challenges she faced was walking because even tho she had done lots of walking around the city and at her job as a waitress she was not ready to walk on the hike because in the book it states that on page 50 - “ I began sweating immediately dusk caking my boots and calves”. We wonder what other fears she will overcome how she will overcome them and what other challenges she will face. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ufSckI8Qlt0oktWntk6inGICbrok-own?usp=sharing

Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

In this pilot episode, we talked about the first 3 chapters we read of Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. We all have our first impressions of the book as well as explained our future predictions on the book and where we think it will go the farther we read. We could all agree on one thing for sure, eventually, this book will go downhill and someone will get hurt in the story.

Quotes: “Later, I would tell myself I hadn’t felt envious of Hassan. Not at all”- I have little knowledge of what this quote by Amir means. This quote is on page 35 after they are woken up by the sound of gunfire and explosions in the middle of the night. Hassan is hugged by his dad, Ali, and Amir is somewhat jealous of this because he always feels distant from his father. But now he says he won’t be feeling this way in the future, this could mean something happens to Hassan. Like maybe he gets killed. Or maybe, he just gets over his jealousy, and it’s not anything remotely violent. - Jackson

“Sanaubar joined the neighborhood kids in taunting Ali” - Page 10 Ali’s face is paralyzed and he has a limp. He also happens to be a Haazar, which people didn’t like. He was taunted by adults and children. But Sanaubar, his wife and cousin also taunted him. She obviously didn’t like Ali so it just made me wonder why she married him and had a kid with him. She ended up running away but it still makes me question why she was in the relationship in the first place. - Tybria

“ After hearing the brother’s account and their father’s plea for mercy, my grandfather ordered the two young men to go to Kandahar at once and enlist in the army for one year- this despite the fact that their family had somehow managed to obtain the exemption from the draft” (pg.24) I chose this quote because I think that this type of punishment would be great for anyone who has committed any murders and is sentenced to execution in prison. We can send them to the army with control over them, so they can fight. If they survive during the time they have been in the army then they can be sentenced to life in jail. -Erec

Gruop menbers, Langston Osbaldo, and Nate So far we have talked about the main character Cheryl and our thoughts and impressions of her. We also talked about how she plans to hike the PCT( Pacific Crest Trail). In addition to that, we also talked about how we thought this hike would change her because the trail is 22 miles long and I trail that long would definitely change her. Fourthly we talked about how after she completes the trial how it would make her a different person and she might change things about herself that she wouldn't have changed before. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ufSckI8Qlt0oktWntk6inGICbrok-own?usp=sharing

Group Members: Kyla B, Sage D, Oliver A, and Gina Z In our podcast we discussed The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, a memoir about a dysfunctional family that runs from the law. Each one of us shared our first impressions/ reactions, provided a quote, and discussed the toxicity of the parents relationship, let alone their parenting.

References:

“I was overcome with panic that she’d see me and call out my name and that someone on the way to the same party would spot us together” (pg 3)

“ Fussing over children who only cry encourages them, she told us. That’s positive reinforcement for negative behavior.” - Page 28

“Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can’t cling to the side your whole life, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is ‘If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.’” page 66

“You’d be destroying what makes it special,” she said. “Its the joshua trees struggle that gives it its beauty.” page 38

Our group members are Michelle, Valeria, and Mykai. Our episode was talking about the 50 pages, of the book “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time”, a book written by Mark Haddon. We gave a brief summary of what we know from the book, by what we read so far in the book. We talked about our thoughts on the book and certain quotes we thought were nice and interesting. At the end of our podcast we talked about our predictions what will happen in the future in this book.

Quotes: “I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them.” (Pg. 8) “ I like dogs, you always know what a dog is thinking.” (Pg. 3) “Mother used to say that Christopher was a nice name because it was a story about being kind and helpful, but i do not want my name to mean a story about being kind and helpful. I want my name to mean me”. (Pg. 16)

Author: Jean Kwok Title: Girl in Translation Kimberly and her mother moved to America when she was in elementary school, thanks to her aunt and uncle. Kimberly and her mom live in a small apartment that’s infested with rats and bugs. It has no heat, so it’s freezing in the winter months. They’re poor, so Kimberly helps her mom work in her aunt’s factory after school. Kimberly started going to a public school that wasn’t in her low-class neighborhood. Her teacher has no empathy for her, even though she barely spoke English when she got there. Kimberly is figuring out how different school in America is from school in Hong Kong. She has only two friends so far, Anette from school andMatt from the factory.
