Corruption & Censorship

Posted by Klarissa Hudson in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 8:45 am

There are many issues and problems in the world these days. Some are recent and some have been going on for years and generations. There’s starvation, abuse, trafficking, abduction, global warming, etc. All these issues and many more are hurting and killing people around the globe. It has to stop and has to change starting with someone to stand up and say something.

So we all have to pick an issue to write about that we want to change. The issue I want to focus on is corruption & censorship. Both are connected and worldwide issues happening sense the beginning of time. People are changed, frightened, affected, killed, abused, misled, and hurt because of these issues. Has anyone ever even tried to stop corruption in jobs, education, homes, and government?

ab
The harsh truth of how some jobs are corrupt in the way they hire people.

-So for those of you that want easy definitions:

Corruption is basically when others, a place, an object, a belief, or television changes people.

Censorship is just when something is blocked off to someone based on their age, gender, race, etc.

-For those who want detailed and brainy definitions:

Corruption is spiritual or moral impurity or deviation from an ideal. In economy, corruption is payment for services or material, which the recipient is not due, under law. This may be called bribery, kickback, or, in the Middle East, baksheesh. In government it is when an elected representative makes decisions that are influenced by vested interest rather than their own personal or party ideological beliefs.

Censorship is the suppression of speech or other public communication, which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the general body of people as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body.

It’s amazing how corrupt minded people censor others knowledge so they think that polluting the earth is okay.

Types of censorship:

Political

State secrets and prevention of attention

Religion

Educational sources

Copy, picture, and writer approval

Creative censorship

Self censorship

Books

Films

Music

Maps

Internet

Types of corruption:

Politics

Police

Philosophy

Jobs

Education

Etc.

Many think that corruption is awful and censorship is moral. The thing is, both of these are decent and terrible. Nothing is ever all good or all bad. Food is fine if you eat the right ones and the right amounts. If you eat too much or the wrong ones then it becomes a problem.

Corruption is unpleasant if it hurts others but all right if it’s to protect someone. Censorship is fine if you’re keeping 5 year olds from watching adult swim but it’s dreadful if you’re taking advantage of being able to censor something. Why isn’t censorship enforced all the time? Why do some parents use too much censoring?

Some say this is wrong and not decent. Is it really?

This shows how some people use sneaky corrupt ways to get what they want not caring about the one person hurt by it.

The world is so corrupt and censored these days that everyone thinks its okay to throw everything in the trash not realizing where it goes.

Social Networking: Positive or Negative?

Posted by Leah Kelly in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 8:45 am

We live in a society where your popularity is defined by how many friends you have on facebook. Where you’re only “cool” if you have a lot of followers on twitter. Where the only reason that you remember someone’s birthday is because of a facebook reminder.
And so the question presents itself… is that okay?
1000x1000
1000x1000
Is it okay that:
  • 39% of Americans spend more time socializing online than face-to-face interactions.
  • 88% of teenagers say that they have seen someone being mean or cruel on a social networking site.
  • 92% of American toddlers have an online presence, ranging anywhere from a single picture posted of them to an entire profile made in their name.
  •  69% of teenagers admit to have put their physical location in a social networking status update.
  • “It may be possible that young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities and can therefore be at risk in their real lives, perhaps more vulnerable to impulsive behavior or even suicide.” - Dr. Himanshu Tyagi, West London Mental Health NHS Trust
  • Teens spend an average of nine hours per week on social networking sites.
But isn’t it also great that:
  •  59% of students on the internet say that they have used social networking to discuss educational topics.
  • 60 million Americans said that they got help with major life issues from people on their social network.
  • Social networking sites allow people to express themselves in ways that they cannot normally do.
  • Through social networking you can connect with family and friends who you might not be able to talk to face-to-face due to distance and such things.

Many smart and educated people can argue the benefits of social networking without a problem. For one, social networking can bring people who have the same interests and/or ideas together. Also, for those who do not share the same opinions it is a good way to learn about new ideas and hear from other people’s point of view. Another reason that social networking can be positive is by way of spreading information. I am part of a service group in our school called buildOn and before we do a drive for a certain program or organization, I update my facebook and twitter status to raise awareness about the action that we are taking, and how my friends can help. As a result, people become interested as well as support our project. Here are some examples of that:

1000x1000
1000x1000
1000x1000-1
1000x1000-1
However, there are many downsides to social networking as well. It is the main way that many kids and teenagers are cyber-bullied, which has been brought up as a very serious issue recently. Also, it can be very distracting. Even as I am writing this blog, I am being constantly distracted by notifications from twitter, tumblr, and facebook. This makes me wonder, how productive are most kids who have nearly unlimited access to social networking while at home? Also, social networking sites can be extremely unsafe. There are over 700,000 online sexual solicitors that have been identified on these sites. Since many teenagers have not been taught adequate internet safety, many have posted personal things that they though were private, but in reality every post that you make is public and leaves an internet footprint.

This issue is very important to me, as I’m sure it is to most kids in my school as well as in our generation. As I stated in my introduction, my generation is one that is living our lives through the phone, through the computer, or through the TV. We tend to think that we always must be connected in some way to the “outside world”. Also, since I go to a technology-based school and all students receive their own laptops, I wonder how many of us have grades that have slipped due to social networking.

How distracted do we actually get when we are supposed to be doing our homework? Does it effet our working habits? Does it effect our health? Will it makes us less responsible in the future? These are all questions that I intend to think more on and begin to do my own research about, including making a survey.

Here is my bibliography.

Teen Pregnancy

Posted by Crystalle Hutchins in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 8:45 am

Blog Post #1 – Informational Post

The World issue that I am dealing with for this project is teen pregnancy. It is an important topic because it can dramatically affect the life of our teens in our generations if a teenage female becomes pregnant and decides to have her child. If she does not, that is taking the life of a person that could’ve grown up and been beneficial to the world. A child that born with teenage parents may not have a fulfilled worry-free life because the parents could not provide for them. This is being torturous to something you would love so dearly because of one irresponsible act in your life.

My issue is that the teenage pregnancy rate is quickly rising in America. I believe that if teenagers were more knowledgeable about the negative results of this issue they would be more precautionary. It can happen to anyone, no matter how careful you are or how unlikely you think it is for it to happen to you. My goal is also to, if teens feel that they will continue to have sex, educate on how prevent pregnancy with teens. For statistics on teen pregnancy, click here.

Cell Phone Stupidity

Posted by Rahed Albarouki in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 8:11 am

YOU are the world. The world is what you make it and what your visions is for it. If you have a problem with it or you want to change something about it than it’s your responsibility to make an impact on the humans of Earth and beyond. I have a problem with this world. The title of my blog, “Cell Phone Stupidity,” should explain my problem. I am not thrilled with my generation.

My Issue:

Do you know what the problem in today’s society is? That teens and young adults, especially, are so blinded by technology. They feel that their computer and their cell phone is the most important thing in the world. Facebook has become one of the most visited websites in the world! For some people, that is the world. Personally, I feel it’s a disgrace what has become of today’s generation. No one picks up a book to research anything; they just go on the web. No one gets up to tell to go talk to somebody, they just text or call them. Handwriting has gotten worse and so has peoples’ ways of thinking. Thousands of people die every single day because they text and drive or they talk and drive at the same time. It makes us unsafe and unaware of what really is happening in the world.

I chose this topic for one reason and one reason only, to show people how technology has blinded us from the REAL world. I need teens to realize what life is all about. Its not about Facebook, Twitter, having the best phone, or the nicest car, it’s about looking for detail and searching for the true meaning of life and what people are actually meant to be and not what technology has made people think they should be.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have done research on many other blogs, including one that I found highly interesting. It talked about how much technology is making kids stupider and it also covered some things that I talked about.

I agree with everything this person is saying. Many other websites have done tests on the difference between people who have been introduced to technology since birth and on people who have never used a cell phone. The “never used a cell phone” person, passed the test. I interviewed three different people. All three were on my side and agreed that technology has made us blind of what really lies in front of us.

One of my main wonders is if the radiation that comes off of different pieces of technology affects how we think and what we do?

According to my research, cell phones can indeed "fry your brain." The radiation that is emitted from cell phones, microwaves, computers, and a numerous amount of other things can in fact make you dumber. The radiation that is given off kills brain cells. But this type of radiation is not killing bad brain cells, it's killing good brain cells. These cells are the ones that make us able to function and do more things.

On a very informative website I noticed that they were advertising for cell phones as I was searching for how cell phones makes humans stupider.

Are You in Risk?

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in English 1 - Dunn on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Diabetes-and-obesity
Diabetes-and-obesity
Many people all over the world weigh more than what they should. Doctors call them overweight. When a person is extremely heavy or fat, doctors call this state of being obesity. Anyone who is about 20 pounds or heavier than his or her desirable weight, is considered overweight. People who are more than 30 or 40 pounds heavier than they should be are considered obese. If we don’t change these statistics, then our next generation will be in greater risk of illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer.

In accordance to the center for disease control, we are eating ourselves into an epidemic of diabetes. According to the international diabetes foundation states "Diabetes and obesity are the biggest health challenges of the 21st century. Since 1999, diabetes has affected more than 16 million Americans. That has increased by more than 40 percent in the last decade. During the same time span obesity increased from 12 percent to 20 percent. Last year diabetes increased by 6 percent and obesity increased by 52 percent. About 80 and 90 percent of Americans with type two diabetes are obese. In relation obesity has a big impact in your health by increasing the risk of diabetes.

Obesity has been linked to other health problems such as high blood pressure. High blood pressure occurs when the body is in hypertension. When children are overweight r obese, they start to get tired quicker. This causes the body greater increase of high blood pressure. Many children in the United States do not realize the risks of being overweight or obese. Many people in the U.S have High blood pressure and the majority of the population is either overweight or obese. These conditions can hurt you so bad that can increase the risks of cancer.

The human body needs certain fats and oils in the body to be completely functional. When humans abuse of those body fats and intake more than the percentage they need, then they are hurting themselves and are in greater risk of obesity. When some Like all of the sections of fat in your body are full and you keep in taking food, your body gets bigger and not full of muscle but full of junk. This slows down the metabolism and your body can’t flush out all of the excessive fats. As a result, you can develop certain types of cancers because the human body was not able to flush out the negative oils out of the human system.

By eating the foods that you find the most “delicious” and not taking care of your body you can suffer from many different thins. You can get various types of diseases from high blood pressure to even cancer. If we don’t change the life style in American children, then the next generation will be harder to protect from these horrid illnesses. Just because you think certain things are healthy for the human body doesn’t mean they are. Take care of yourself and be sure to be aware of the risks of obesity.

Piracy and You

Posted by Gabriel Musselman in English 1 - Dunn on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 11:11 pm

For a 9th grade English project, my class is researching and blogging about topics that we find interesting or relevant to us. After thinking long and hard about this, a light bulb came on over my head. Aha! That’s it! Internet piracy. Internet piracy is one of the most talked about and debated topics in the United States and all throughout the world these days, and it’s all due to three small laws that seemed harmless to the world until they were brought to light by the internet community. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), CISPA (Cyber Intelligence and Sharing Protection Act), and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are probably the most controversial technology laws to date in the U.S.
120404-cispa
120404-cispa
These laws were brought about with the intentions of stopping internet piracy and protecting copyrights, but many believe they have overstepped their bounds. If these laws were or are passed, it could potentially invade the privacy of every internet user in the entire country. Basically, these laws put the power to investigate, judge, and criminalize into the power of the entertainment industry, which is the main target of online pirates. How is this legal, you ask? The government believes that this will help put the power of copyright into the creator’s hands, but really all it is doing is deputizing the entertainment industry and giving them the means to act on their own accord. If this happened then the right of privacy would be taken away from every citizen of this country.

93fd4bb194c012a812138c2383a2785d
This is why it interests me. I personally don’t enjoy being told how to live my life by someone who has no authority over me. Pirating is a personal choice, and no one should make your decisions for you. The problem is that most pirates do not find anything wrong with what they are doing (says a Go-Gulf.com article). Maybe this is why most people find these laws to be ridiculous. They think that they are trying to take away the ability to choose. Well, I’m with them. I won’t stand by while the entertainment industry tries to take away my rights. I won’t have it! You can help too! Contact your local Congressman and tell him how you feel about SOPA, PIPA, and CISPA!

International Domestic Animal Abuse

Posted by Nia Hammond in English 1 - Dunn on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 1:10 pm

The You and the World project has to do with individuals researching to find current issues and ways to express interest in the topic to the outside world through blogging. The current events and issues that have happened could be local, international, national, or any other type of things that need change. With this project, the researcher is really passionate about their topic and has the freedom to express so through the blog. While researching their topic, the individuals find more and more information, enough to pass it around to all those around who might also want to know more about other current events, issues, and problems. After learning so much about the topics of issues and current events, all individuals look for a change that they could help make.

The issue that I am looking at is an international issue. Although different countries have different cultural values of animals, I am more focused on worldwide domestic animal abuse. There are so many issues with every single house pet man could think of and how they are rejected and neglected by thousands. I find this topic very interesting because of how there are so many cases of abuse in not only America, but all across the globe. For example, adoption centers for cats and dogs are so full these days because they were saved from terrible experiences back at what they had to call home. This issue with the abuse of not only cats and dogs, but other pets too, keeps me passionate about it because the abuse is completely senseless.  Every ten seconds, an animal is abused. They are helpless under their owners, whom are supposed to treat their pets as an addition to their families, as a newborn baby. Animals do not know right from wrong unless taught, and hurting them and treating them unfairly is never the right way to teach right from wrong.

So far in this project, I've found out loads. For example, stats from the Aspca website reports that although many pets are owned, there is a huge amount of those in shelters, specifically dogs and cats. There are literally thousands of community animal shelters in the US alone, and over five million domestic animals come into shelters yearly. These animals are either given up by their previous owners, or captured by animal control. The saddest part of this story is that over half of the millions of animals moved to animal shelters are euthanized while there. For those who do not know, euthanasia is the "intentional ending of a life in order to relieve pain and suffering" (from Wikipedia). This means that dogs, cats, and other pets are "put to [eternal] sleep" when it seems like nothing else but death would be good for them. There are countless amounts of stray animals in the US, especially the almost one hundred million in America alone, buy why? Because they were put out of the house by their careless owners? Did they run out, and their owners were not responsible enough to get them to come back? Or did owners move from one house to another and left behind a "small" thing that they would not need? All of these could be factors. But all of these should not happen for pets that do not know how to cope with these situations. That's why they need owners.

When pets are abused, they could be for money, for fighting, for behavior, anything, really. Some pets are even abused out of pure love. What I mean by that is that there are animal hoarders that keep hundreds of pets cramped up in one house. These animals are usually cats. They go from two cats to ten and then fifty before a month is finished. Owners care too much and love all their animals. But this just might be a form of too much love. Yes, the cats are found on the streets and multiply in the house they live in, but conditions become so hostile that the cats usually become sick and sometimes die. With dogs, the same can happen. But, a more reoccurring problem with the abuse of dogs is the advancement of puppy mills. In those, puppies, instead of having a "childhood," are bred before mature, so that they could go to pet stores. The offspring of these puppies usually have medical problems. In puppy mills, dogs are bred at a young age, raised in harsh conditions and in cages, and are bred with siblings often. That is why all pet owners should, instead of buying pets from stores like Monster Pets or off the Internet, get them from actual local breeders in the area.

Finally, the most current story I found in animal abuse is that the al-Quaeda terrorist group has developed more plans to plant bombs in US airlines. One by the name of Ibrahim al-Asiri has found multiple ways to pass bomb holders through metal detectors at airports, including surgically implanting bombs in helpless pets. Not only is the pet victimized, but the hundreds of people on a flight will die from a stunt such as this! No animal deserves to die in that way. From here, I want to know what triggers owners specifically to abuse their pets, what type of abuse happens to animals in labs instead of homes, and how people can prevent this from happening besides donating.

Nursing Home & Hospital Abuse

Posted by Antoinette Hiller in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 3:11 pm

In my 9th grade English class, we were given a project on World issue for our “You and the World” project. I will be displaying 3 blogs, this will be the first blog. For my Q4 benchmark I will be discussing the issue about nursing home and hospital abuse. This will be dealing with both elders and children patients.

The issue is that, around the world many patients have been abused by hospital staff and nursing staff for years. Not only have they been physically abused but also mentally and emotionally. From what I know about this issue is that most of the patients have been mistreated in all types of ways such as being unfed and not being bathed. Most stories have been told but others have not.

The thing that made me interested in this topic is from a book that I read called “A child called it”. It was a true story about a young boy being abused by his mother. The only difference is that it didn’t take place in a hospital or a nursing home, though it still inspired me to do more abuse cases and to learn more. Another thing that made me interested is the fact that this isn’t a very popular topic and this is one that most people don’t take into much consideration. I want everyone to see just how these hospitals cared for their patients and how the survivors dealt with the torturing they had to face each day they were in there. I want to do more research to see if it is still taking place as strongly as it was before and to look more deeply into the lives of victims that had to go through these acts.

STDs in the Teen World

Posted by Jeremiah Cunningham in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2:53 pm

My name is Jeremiah Cunningham and I am doing a blog about STDs in the teen world. In the world today, Teens have many struggles. From school, home, relationship problems, and responsibility issues. One topic of teenage life that tops all of these is Sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Out of the 12 million cases of STDs, 3 million of those cases are teen cases. That is 25 percent. And when it comes to STDs, America really doesn’t do a good job stressing out the factors, consequences, and how-nots of STDs. This is a main factor as to why teens catch these diseases.

STDs can affect anyone who is sexually active. The true definition of a STD is a disease or infection that is spread from person to person by sexual intercourse. Anyone can get it no matter gender, race, or income; no one is immune to the disease. Unfortunately, teens are more at risk to catch the disease. Some kids weren’t taught about the risks of sexual intercourse and how to protect themselves.

This disease is more than just risky. It is also an embarrassment, and a deadly disease. It is a serious health issue. If you don’t get checked out or don’t find out you have one, you can do some serious damage to your body and even lead to death. The younger you are, the greater your chances are to getting an STD.  It is very easy to get one too. First off all, you don’t know what the person you get intimate has. 9 times out of 10 the person doesn’t know they have one as well. You can also develop a STD if you involve in intercourse with numerous people. Sexual isn’t is the only way you can get one. You can also get one by touching a cut of someone that has one.

What made me interested in this topic is because lots of people today are infected with this disease. Everyday someone either gets the infection, or they die from it. I sometimes think what i would do if i were to be infected with this disease. It makes me sad to even think of the young men and women who have to go through this everyday. You can’t have sex, or have a kid. It’s crazy how even having sex with one person can get you infected.

Infants in Sub-Sahara Africa Affected by Hydrocephalus (Blog #1)

Posted by Nikki Adeli in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2:41 pm

You and the World? More like me and my world. There are many issues that affect this world we all live in horrific ways and many in spectacular that shape us all. I am blessed with many fantastic things in my life and when I get the chance to give to people who are a lot more less fortunate than I am, I am all in. When my English teacher, Ms. Dunn, gave me the chance the shine a light on something I wanted to change in the world, I couldn’t pick one. Hunger? Poverty? War? Politics? Most of these are already in the spotlight and have many corporations and organizations fighting to stop these problems. But then I remembered a documentary  I had watched recently that spoke of a major drawback in sub-Saharan Africa, around Uganda, that affected 75% of the infants and newborns in that area. Hydrocephalus.
hydrocephalus-2
hydrocephalus-2
(Above) A 1 year old baby who has had Hydrocephalus for the past 3 months.

Pediatric Hydrocephalus is the build up of Cerebral Spinal Fluid that surrounds the brain that puts an increased amount of pressure on the head. This can be a very dangerous condition if not treated properly. Hydrocephalus causes the baby to grow a head unnaturally large in comparison to the body. So large, that the baby or infant can’t hold their head up by themselves.

cure
cure
The one and only hospital that supports the babies and infants with Hydrocephalus in Uganda and the surrounding areas. This hospital was founded by the CURE foundation.

In the United States, 1 in every 500 baby delivered is diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. Fortunately, there are more than 3,500 neurologists in the United States to help cure the patient affected. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are about 100,000-375,000 NEW cases of Pediatric Hydrocephalus every year and more than 4,000 every month. In addition there are only four doctors that have the ability to help with this disease. Additionally, there is only one hospital in that entire area that patients can go to. The hospital isn’t close to most villages. Families affected must  save up all of their farming money for 6-7 months just to get transportation to the hospital. So by the time families come back home, they are usually always bankrupt.

The scary reality and truth to this entire issue is that even 90% of the infants and babies affected by Hydrocephalus die...sometimes even with treatment. The mortality statistic is horrid. The infants affected die for a few reasons. One, because there aren't enough doctors, there aren't doctors to follow up on the procedure on the baby incase something goes wrong. Second, lack of money cause a lack of transportation to hospitals to get the proper help necessary. Third, there are some families who are tricked into believing that hydrocephalus is not a disease. They have elders in their neighborhood who trick them into paying them more than hospital costs to them "to take the devil out" of the child.

What these people need is support from people like us in America who have so much to give. We need people oversees helping out. Doctors to help on the medical standpoint. Volunteers for the short distance transportation. Most importantly, teachers and educators to really educate people of the affected areas in Africa that this is a killer disease that happens all around the world and not in their local village. They need a helping hand and through this project I am determined to do so.
