Do You Care About Your Environment? #2

Posted by Jalen Smith in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 10:32 pm

After reveiving more information about environmental issues I had noticed that we are at high risk's of suffering big consequences. The reason why I am saying this is because we are really abusing our environment. We are not taking care of it the way we are suppose to take care of it. It is the smallest things that can cause big problems. Such as throwing away trash or even driving to work in a car. These things can really impact our world on so many levels. The EPA said that certain toxins were released and could have major impacts for our environment. From 2004 to 2005, dioxin releases decreased by 23 percent and mercury releases fells by 9 percent. Petroleum refining releases dropped 10 percent, transportation equipment registered a 6 percent decrease and chemical manufacturing cut releases dropped 4 percent. Everyone seems to be very concerned because no one knows what will happen in the future. Also people are very concerned about the water that we drink after the disaster in Japan. As you may know the chemicals that were released from the power plant got into the ocean. People are afraid that the water that we drink could have the chemicals in it. I think that now in some stores they might raise the prices of the water because of this great tragedy. It would be much harder to find cleaner water now that this had happened. With out clean water many people would die because of dehydration.

Gay rights moving faster than civil right?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Posted by Dejah Harley in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 1:36 pm

From my last blog, I just finished telling you about how some people think of same sex marriage as a flaw. However, we all have flaws that we don't often wish to show. The Gay Rights movement is going quickly. Gay Rights activist are now getting their points made to the people in power to legalize same sex marriage.
I recently read an article called " A tipping point for Gay marriage". In the beginning a statement was made of a scenario where an client gets fired for having a very strong opinion. However, this was a true scenario when a client wanted to defend same sex marriage, however the law firm said that it wouldn't go against federal law, the constitution. This incident has Gay Rights activist speaking up louder than ever. The great thing that came out of this incident was that it reached to people in power. THAT WAS THE GOAL. People recognized that the law firm was wrong.
At the end of this article the statement was made "those turning points still have a ways to go. I certainly can see that day coming. Compared with the civil rights movement for African-Americans, the movement for gay rights has proceeded with a remarkable degree of speed." I am happy to see this statement. I think that when the Civil rights movement was going on , people were WAY more stubborn, for lack of a better word. The fact that the Gay Rights movement can be seen is remarkable. It is finally shown that they should have the same rights as everyone else.

Where we left off..

Posted by Drue Boccuti in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Since the last time I left off, I've learned a lot more about why teens might commit suicide.

Remember how I mentioned the girls that made a suicide pact and got hit by the train? Well, I talked to my friend who knew the one and I found out all about what made her want to do such a horrible thing. Her father had committed suicide a little while ago, her and her boyfriend were going through a rough time. Her mom was having trouble raising her and her siblings by herself. So as you can see she had a lot going on. With her dad committing suicide alone had to be a lot for her to handle. On top of all this she had school to worry about. Her life was very hectic and she let it get to the point where she thought she would be better off if she wasn't here anymore.

However, teens find many other reasons to commit suicide. For example bullying. Bullying can be so hurtful if you let it get to that point. Another reason could be stress. It's just easier to end the stress by doing this. Another thing could be family problems. Like in the case above, with her dad. It was to much to handle. Or maybe a divorce or new dad/ mom. You never know. That's why I feel it's important to be nice to everyone because you don't know there story.

Women Need Help

Posted by Taylor Ximines in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 3:07 pm

So last time I told you on how the government was trying to shut down Planned Parenthood. I explained them shutting them down, but not to much the help that women actually need from Planned Parenthood. Statistics have shown that most women do not practice birth control methods because they simply can not afford them. Most of the women that use Planned Parenthood are high school kids and young adults (ages 14-24).
Most young females know that if they ask their parents to take them get birth control then it will cause a problem within the family. Planned Parenthood also gives out information to females on how to be sexually safe and what precautions to take. I mean isn't it always better to be safe then sorry? The government really has no idea what goes on with urban women. They have no clue what it is like for a woman to go and try to get sexual health.
In the end it all comes down to proving the point that Planned Parenthood does to many services for it to be cancelled.

Is Your Future Worth Enough Part 2

Posted by Robert Jenkins in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 1:57 pm

As follow up research about budget cuts I was able to find out the direct effects on sport cuts. The cut will take away 7% of the funding towards  public sports. This  will result in a complete cut of middle school intersolatic sports leagues and teams. It will also cause minor cuts of some sports in High schools.

But as a student i will like to know how this is directly effecting how students like me will learn and how teachers will teach. For example is the class sizes getting increase to much larger amount? Or will to be something like school will have less resources to text books or computer technology? This is a group of question i hope to research and answer for my next blog entry.

Around the World

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Studies have shown that America is within the top 10 fattest Countries in the world. But we're not as high as most people think. At 74% America is the 9th fattest country on the planet. Now of course this isn't the worst, but if you look at it in another way America is the fattest superpower in the World. If compared with China, there is  huge difference. Why is that? Is it dieting? What about laws and resources? Here in America any store available has an abundance of food able to make any person become a glut whether they're the regular, vegetarian or vegan. It's worthy of stating that the fattest country in the world (Nauru) isn't number one due to over eating, but from disease. This is an excusable case from saying that these people are a bunch of gluts. Just to point out, the skinniest country in the world is eritrea with on a 4% obesity rate. That may not be the healthiest possible state if that was America.

Ozone

Posted by Henry Poeng in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 12:12 pm

As we all have heard before, the ozone is disappearing. What is the ozone? The ozone makes up 90%+ Of the stratosphere. This protective layer filters out harmful UV rays that can potentially kill any living thing. As the ozone disappears, we are have a more likely chance of getting hit by harmful UV rays. But there is hope! After a quick search around the internet, there are reports that state that the ozone is no longer disappearing but actually rebuilding itself. It should be completely back to normal. But it will take a couple of years. This might be around 2078.

Waking up in the morning, I took the time to look out the window and saw trash everywhere. Looking back at my calendar, I slowly realized it wasn't trash day. All the trash outside just fortified my assumption. Littering was the answer for all the trash being everywhere. It wasn't just a piece  of paper here or there. It was little mole hills everywhere with all sorts of things. All these little mole hills of trash, decay and make toxins that destroy the Ozone layer.

Is it ok ?

Posted by Tyler Creighton in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 9:12 am

TV shows like Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant is  either directly or indirectly celebrating teenage pregnancy and encouraging it. A recent survey by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the rate of teenage pregnancy is not declining any more.According to the report, nearly 64 percent of the teenage boys found it acceptable for an unmarried girl to have a child and more than 70 percent of the girls agreed with the boys. What I am wondering is , why is this acceptable. Majority of the teen girl pregnancies have resulted in broken families, children who have been neglected proper care, health impacts on the young mothers and higher infant mortality rates. As the reader do you feel that birth control is safe , even though it's known to being 100 percent safe.Sex is a way of life. However, our last generation of the baby boomers made promiscuity a fashion. Sex is not sacred anymore. The results are unfolding in front of us as mothers who are themselves kids, and children who are sick, uncared for and who have a high mortality rate. It is in our hands to put a stop to teen pregnancies. Personally i think its not acceptable , but fallow me more for more info on why i think it might increase over the years nd this issue might grow.

Why Do Homosexuals Have To Hide?

Posted by Dakota Foster in English 1 - Dunn on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 6:33 pm

Down to the Facts:

  • 28% of gay/lesbian youth are forced to drop out of school because of their sexuality. (National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, 1998)
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death on college campuses (CDC 2008).
  • For every completed suicide by a young person, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made (Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey 2003).
  • Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (Massachusetts Youth Risk Survey 2007).
  • LGBT youth who come from highly rejecting families are more than 8 times as likely to have attempted suicide than LGB peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection (Ryan C, Huebner D, et al - Peds 2009;123(1):346-352)
  • High school students hear 25 anti-gay remarks every day. Of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) high schoolers, 42 percent have been physically harassed on the basis of their perceived sexual orientation/gender identity.
  • 25 anti-gay remarks everyday, that is 175 every week, that is about 750 a month, and 9,125 a year

Type in ‘teen suicides related to gay bullying’. There are a million links to stories about teens that died by suicide because of bullying. Those stories have links to a billion other stories. Here are some: Tyler Clementi, 18 - student at Ridgewood High School killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge on September 22nd 2010, Justin Aaberg, 15, hanged himself in his room in July 2010, Kameron Jacobsen, 14 – freshman at Monroe Woodbury High School 2011, Lance Lundsten, 18 – senior at Jefferson High School 2011, and Brandon Bitner, 14 – freshman at Pennsylvania High School threw himself in highway traffic, thirteen miles from his home.  Some stories are as young as 9 years old and the deaths are brutal. One stories about a boy that was 10 and shot himself in the head, in his closet.

GSANI, ILGA, IGLHRC, IGLYO, ILGLaw, GRIN are gay rights organizations. People that know about the hardships gay teens face, they know the taunts and the looks the teens get nowadays, run these organizations. These organizations are trying to change the anti-gay programs in school because they know that they are not working. If these programs were working, then there would be less teen suicides. These organizations have been around since homosexuals have been openly gay, this website It Gets Better. It gives videos from actors, strangers, and friends that talk about their experiences, and how it get better, promoting the Trevor Project. This project helps homeless teens that were disowned by their family, people to talk to about gay bullying, and tries to stop teen suicides.

In my next blog, I will talk about different polices or laws that have to do with gay rights. For example, Prop 8, Don't Ask and Don't Tell policy. I will even talk about different laws in different countries all over the world, like Uganda.
