Me and The World- The Energy Crisis #3

Posted by Jonathan Spencer in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:24 pm

I don't like the way the energy crisis is going. We are going to run out of the coal and natural gas that the earth to hundreds of years to make. We need a new source of energy that is renewable and doesn't take the earth hundreds of years to make. I propose that we use either Solar Power, Wind Power or Hydro Power. Each of these energy sources have Pros and Cons.

Unknown-1Unknown-2images
Solar vs. Hydro vs. Wind

Solar
Solar power is can be used almost any where and isn't that difficult to maintain. he system will also last for a very long time and it is silent so it won't mess with its environment. The problem is that Solar Power is not cheap to set up. It is very costly, and finding a good position for it is also difficult. There is a varying in power output and will probably require a large battery bank (place to store the energy) since Solar power can't operate at night.

Hydro
Hydro is great because it is the lowest cost per wattage and has a predictable annual energy output. The system also has low maintenance and can be made unobtrusive. Hydro power is difficult to find a good location for and parts will wear out easier and require more maintenance. It also can be costly to set up and damages the surrounding area.

Wind
Wind power has cheap energy cost and also has a predictable out put of energy. The problem is, that it is very expensive yo put turbines up and it is difficult to place them in places because of their size.It is also a hazard to birds and people object to the tower aesthetically.

Reasons Behind The Abuse-2

Posted by Shannon Powers in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 9:55 am

As I've told you before my topic is on animal abuse. It’s a growing problem. My Mom had a cat that suffered from animal abuse. My mom had a cat that was a semi – indoor semi- outdoor cat.  One day her cat didn’t come home, so naturally my Mom to look for him. She found him in an ally crushed under a cinder block he was still alive. That cat suffered to death. Now I’m not saying that the person was evil he could have been a kid trying to impress his friends. That though doesn’t excuse the fact that he hurt another living thing. A lot of animal abuse comes from people who don’t know how to take care of their pets properly. Most cases of animal abuse stem from people who forget to feed their pet or that they even have one. Hoarders are also an issue

Its okay, because it was Israel- #2

Posted by Goldie Robins in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 23, 2011 at 4:53 pm

Blog #2

As you already know my topic is Israel. Like I said in the first blog I wanted to focus more on what’s happening with Hamas and how people like, Michael Levin die everyday fighting for their home land, and then there is Gilad Shalit who gets captured. The videos are very touching and interesting to watch. It really shows that people care enough about something that they will fight for anything. There is only so much information to date about Gilad Shalit, and what the deal with his situation, but if Hamas isn’t lying he is still alive and ok.  September  14, 2009 was the first video broadcasted since he was captured in 2006. Since most of the video are on YouTube, I could get you a link either at the bottom of this blog which you would have to watch outside of school or  I can see if there are other sites I could get the videos for you. I, my self feel like people need to know more about whets happening not just from CNN. Every news website or TV Channel have their own views and opinions. In what I see/ hear on the news everyone try’s to blame it on Israel, and how different things are their fault. Well its easier saying that then actually taking time to research. I bet 9/10 people reading this didn’t know that Hamas use little kids as human shields because they know that the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) won’t bomb or shoot the them. They do this because, they don’t like dangering the lives of little kids. They don't shoot them because they decide not to. They are all fighting form their homeland. Get to know about Israel, it won't hurt you.

Gay is the New Black?- Blog Post 2

Posted by Lexus Forman in English 1 - Dunn on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Gay is not a civil right? I don't understand, I think it should be because you should have any and every right to be happy in your own skin without feel any way about it. The definition of civil rights is rights to personal liberty established by the 13th and 14th Amendments to the U.S. constitution and certain Congressional acts, especially as applied to an individual or a minority group; the rights to full legal, social, and economic equality extended to blacks. As I research more and more about civil rights I find that people are blaming the president of the United States of America, Barack Obama for this non-sense. Msnbc.com are saying that when Barack Obama got elected in 2008, that is when voters in California voted to over turn the rights for gays and lesbians to get married in Florida and California. Msnbc.com asks “how can you compare being black to being gay?” You can easily hide the physical appearance of being gay to dodge the harmful discrimination by other people. However, you can’t disguise the color of black skin. There is not a way to escape the mind corrupting discrimination and non-acceptance.

Depression and Suicide SLATE 2

Posted by Nicholas Murray in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 1:06 pm

In my studies I have found these few facts about teen suicide and my opinion on them-

·      May be triggered by a horrible event: Death of a loved one, break-up, failure at something like school. (This may make the person suffering from this cause suicide because they want to forget all of the pain or to want to be with the one they lost)

·      In teens, it is difficult to tell if they suffer from depression because they symptoms are close to the way normal teens are.(since no one can help them and they may suffering from the loneliness)

·      Signs of depression: doing worst in school, not doing well with friends and family, substance abuse, oversleeping, change in eating habits, breaking laws and obsession with death. (These are things to look out for so that you can help out the people who need it)

Child abuse and Sexually abuse cases.

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 10:12 am

I had found a lot more then the first time. I learn about a daycare that was committing child abuse they would grab the kid and drag them to put them in different place. They would leave marks on the kid and they won't care until they were found out they got fried and sent to court for child abuse.

Then there is the McMartin Daycare case. The case was about a child that was sexually abused. The mother Judy Johnson didn't know that this was happening until one day when her son Matthew came home and said that his anus hurt him to have bowel movements, so his mother took him to a doctor, who declined to examine him.  On August 11, she examined Matthew in the morning and he seemed okay.  However, when he returned home from the preschool, she claimed, his anus was red and itchy. She began to perceive something more nefarious: She believed that Ray Buckey, the only male teacher at the school, was abusing her son. She kept on questioning her son to see if what she was thinking of was true. One day her son was playing doctor and giving people "injections," she asked Matthew if Ray had ever done that to him.  Again, he said no.  However, he did admit that Ray had taken his temperature, and then Judy Johnson jumped to the conclusion that this was a disguised form of sexual abuse.  Then she took Matthew to the doctors for a rectal examination. It was not only Matthew that was being abused but also every child his Ray's class.

The picture shown is Raymond Buckey or better known as Ray the daycare teacher that sexually abused kids.

Love, Blood, Sweat, and Tears! Domestic Violence #1

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 9:24 am

Me & The World

Loving someone and being in a relationship can be dangerous. You can have heartache, infidelity, and financial issues. Many problems can occur, but the biggest danger in a relationship is Domestic violence. I’m super interested in Domestic violence because Domestic violence is an issue, and many people look over it and don’t care for the problem.

Domestic violence can harm you physically and mentally; it can harm you so bad, that you stay in the relationship. Some people get addicted and get attached to the violence. Domestic violence can come from any sex, male or female. Domestic violence is used to control your spouse or lover, to dominate the relationship. The abuser likes to play mind tricks, and get you really scared. They threaten you, break things, are super hostile, and very aggressive.

I don’t understand how you can love someone, which harms you physically and emotionally. That hits you and insults you, damages your feelings and makes you insecure. Someone that makes you bleeds your own blood, and tastes your own tears. How come so many women and men stay in the relationship? The abuser is the coward not the person being abused. The abuser needs to harm someone to make them feel big about their self.

The scariest part of it all is that people die from domestic violence. People lose loved ones, they have heart attacks, internal bleeding, stress level to high, and worst of all the abuser kills them with there bare hands. If the abusers feel they are losing power in the relationship. If I ever got abused I would be very distraught, to sit and go through pain and suffering. To eat blood and tears everyday of my life, and to live life with permanent Scars outer and inner body.

Love, Blood, Sweat, and Tears! Domestic Violence #2

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 9:22 am

Me & The World

In the last blog I gave the basic information about domestic violence. I gave a summary about the types of domestic which are emotional violence, physical violence, and sexual violence. Domestic abuse is an epidemic in communities, cities, states, countries, and the world.  One of the most un reported crimes in the world. Change sure will come, but this blog is about the numbers and statistics.

One in every four women will experience domestic violence on any type of level in her life times. 1 of every 30 men will experience domestic violence in his lifetime. 85% of the victims are usually women. 1 of every 6 women will be raped, and 1 of every 33 men will be raped. More women get sexually and physically abused, than men do. Most people get raped by their own partner or lover.

Domestic violence is serious and is an eye opener. Even though women are usually the main victims, gentlemen please be aware you can also be a victim.  Domestic violence can end your life, give you emotional trauma, and harm you severely. You should go get help, not only is your partner or lover harming you but your harming yourself by staying. Domestic violence can be anywhere and sometimes people don’t even know when their partners are harming them emotionally. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS FAR FROM A GAME!

Cuts in the Budget 2.0

Posted by Teige Dougherty in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 9:16 am

These cuts are really bad for most students. It means that if your only shot at getting to go to a good college was through a sport, then you need to go to a private school. This is difficult if you do not have the money or if your grades are not good enough to get into the school. Not only will this increase the rate of students that do not further their education by going to college, it will also increase incarceration rates because students will have no way to get a job that would be enough to live on, and will turn to illegal things.

If the incarceration rate does go up it will also take more and more money away from schools because they will have to pay for the students that are now in jail. This cycle will continue unless they fix this law and prevent these budget cuts to the school districts.

Cuts in the Budget

Posted by Teige Dougherty in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 9:15 am

The school district of Philadelphia has set forth severally strict budget cuts. In total they are cutting 1.1 billion dollars. This effects me very strongly because both of my new advisors are being laid off because of the budget cuts. Another way that this affects me, is that all sports are being cut off at this school, and I was hoping to play soccer next year. Now I won't be able to do this.
There is money for the districts but instead of putting the money toward us they put it toward building more jails. This is because it costs the school district close to $4000 per child, and it costs only $3500 to keep a prisoner incarcerated.
Their reasoning for cutting the money is simple. They say that we have been over funded for the past couple of years and we are just being returned to our normal funding.
I wonder if all school districts are going through the same thing or if it has been mismanaged. I will research other states budget cuts and see if they cut education as much as they did in Philadelphia
