Self portrait, 24x36” large - charcoal or pencil

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Going in to this project, I was so confident. I did the smaller portrait so now I’m a little more comfortable. But the only thing I was nervous about was drawing on big paper. Trying to draw at a bigger size is difficult. But I started out on what I know, so first I drew my head, and made sure my chin was looking right. The mirror is a big help because if you draw what you see it will come out great. Then I started with my eyes, but this time. I added shading and darker lines, so it can look more real. My nose I did better this time, better than the small self-portrait. My hair was different style from my smaller self-portrait, so my ears were covered. I added shading in my hair and then tried to show my cheekbones more. I was happy with the final product.

color wheel, 18x18” - watercolor

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 9:20 pm

For the color wheel first I watch a video and looked at different color wheels. I did mines a little different; in each triangle I did one color but different shades. The colors I did were red, pink, purple, blue, orange, green, and yellow. This was the more fun and coolest picture of this quarter. I enjoy painting, and mixing colors. You’re experimenting with new ideas and beautiful colors. After I was done painting each, I outlined it with black. After drying for two days, my color wheel turned out so nice.

Quarter 3 Artwork

Posted by Rosemarie Knibbe in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 9:10 pm

This quarter I decided to break away from the assignments Ms. Hull had for us and do my own thing.

Photography:

A couple of months ago my grandfather gave me his old SLR film camera to use because he didn't want it anymore. I was thrilled to have a nice film camera because of my love for photography. When I first tried to figure out how to use the camera I came out with a completely blank film. I gave it up for a while but then one of my mothers coworkers worked with me and showed me how to use the camera. We went to a park near my house and she showed me how to change the apature and the f-stop. She taught me how to tell how much exposure I needed and just the basics of working a film SLR camera. I brought the film to a CVS to be developed and was pleased that every picture on the film came out. Not all of them came out well but they were something. Most of them did come out surprisingly well. The hardest part of learning about the exposure was being inside of my house because the light wasn't as bright and natural. I didn't edit any of the pictures it is simply how the film came out which I really like the affect it has.

For the waterfall pictures I put both in despite how similar they were because I couldn't decide which I liked better. On the one hand the 1st has an erie look to it and I happen to like how it is unfocused but the 2nd I was able to focus the camera on the water and the dirt so it came out clearer.

Also the photo of the bridge uses the rule of thirds which my mom's coworkers told me about. I has 3 different points of focus and everything isn't straight on which makes it more interesting and appealing to the eye.

Color Wheel:

For this assignment I stook to Ms. Hull's plan for us. The assignment was to make a color wheel made of 12 parts and only use primary colors. I struggled a bit at first with knowing how to mix the colors to get the lighter and darker shades but I eventually got the hang of it and I'm proud of the outcome.

Texture:

For this assignment we were meant to draw three different textures but I decided to draw a bunch of scales and make it my own a bit. I drew scales that look somewhat like a dragons scales and then I colored them in with different shades of green and blue. I really like the outcome I think it really turned out how I wanted it to.

Self portrait, 8x11” small - pencil

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 8:22 pm

First off I started off with a moan. I hate drawing my self, and I don’t believe in my talents. But I grab a sharp pencil and start to draw. I draw the shape of my head, and carve my chin. I start to draw my eyebrows and eyes, it was my best work. Then I started to carve my nose, while I stare in the mirror. Nose was the hardest part, but I tried. I did the ears next, as exact as possible. The hair was most fun and creative. I added color and different strokes to my hair. I feel like I did well; now next time when I draw my portrait I will be confident.

Mferry - Reflection

Posted by Matthew Ferry in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 9:56 pm

For my third quarter the primary focus of my quarter was on spray painting, with a budding interest in fashion design.
Having enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania as a Young Scholar, I was given many things from the University; the right to visit the many prestigious libraries, facilities, and events on campus. More importantly, I had to obtain a student ID card to fully utilize these unique components of my experience at Penn. Having a Penn ID card allowed me to fully utilize all of the resources at my potential and.. obtaining spray paint. My ID card for Penn didn't include my birthdate, but just stated that I was an undergraduate at the University. Seeing this as an opportunity to utilize rights and activities that minors aren't legally able to take part in, I decided to buy some spray paint, as spray painting and graffiti have always been a form of art I have had an appreciation for, after seeing Keith Haring's mural in South Philly.
Though I have a great appreciation of the late Keith Haring and the icons that he created, I wanted to create something unique that would have an association with myself, while sustaining my own originality. I did not want to do a tag or something of that sort, as I have no appreciation for vandalizing property with a tag. I begun experimenting with different stencils that I would spray paint. To better understand how to properly cut and spray, I often did simple, symmetrical objects, such as circles and squares till I become more comfortable cutting more complex stencils, as I did with the sniper one and camera shutter.
This project was essentially an adaption of my final second quarter project, which involved spray painting. I learned from that project using cardboard cutouts were not ideal to use as stencils, as they were difficult to cut, and got wet and weathered with each use of paint. I instead used stenciling paper this time, as it would be easier to cut, and much more durable, capable of dealing with bending and liquid, where the cardboard was unable to. By modifying the material used as a stencil, I was able to create higher quality artwork than I was able to produce last quarter.
The first stencil I created was a circular, cartoonish bomb looking stencil, similar in appearance to 'The Hundreds' iconic bomb. My bomb lacked a face though, unlike 'The Hundreds' icon. After creating this stencil, I had a request to create a Fluer De Lis stencil for Whitney. For this I decided to play it safe and not free hand the icon, but instead printed out a copy, traced over it on my stenciling paper, then cut out the stencil. The second stencil set that I created was inspired by an image I saw on tumblr of a camera shutter. This stencil I did entirely free hand, creating several different parts of the shutter, which ended at the center, to form a circle. This was one of my favorite stencils that I made. After creating this stencil, I made a stencil that was inspired by reading The Nuer, by E. E. Evans-Pritchard. I created a stencil of that was inspired by The Nuer and by Keith Haring's stencils. The results from this were a stencil that was similar to Keith Haring's work, but very different at the same time.
My final stencil that I created this quarter were a variety of different sniper icon ones. My process for this was to find various different circular objects, and trace them on separate pieces of paper. After I had a collective amount of different sized circles, I began to trace them all onto one stencil. My original idea was to just have a ton of circles, some that were sprayed, getting smaller and smaller. Though the problem with this was that I would be unable to create this sort of stencil. I know realize that this would have been possible, if I simply cut out the original circular stencils that I collected, but no matter, I was still content with the final result. Realizing at the time there was no other option than to draw two lines between the stencils to add the support and connect the different circles, my stencil began to take the shape of a sniper icon. I was happy with this result.
Towards the end of this quarter, I began to develop a serious interest in clothing. I've always been told I have quite an eye for finding stylish and unique pieces of clothing, and I finally decided to utilize my ideas for taste to create something. I began to develop and design my own clothing line. Most of which are hats and variations of denim jackets. I chose hats due to my new found obsession with Supreme brand hats and their unique, 5-panel designs. Denim jackets I have always loved to wear, and see them as a very versatile piece of clothing. Though my ideas for these hats and jackets are still developing, I have created two hat designs, and one jacket design. The first  hat design is a five panel hat with a more modern cameo design, that is on the brim of the hat. The primary color of the hat comes in three different colors, black, red or orange. The second hat design is different from the other one. The brim and sides of the hat are a navy blue, while the middle of the hat is a fluorescent red. I chose to do a dark-highlight color scheme for this hat, as I believe if the hat was just navy blue, it would just be boring, and if it were just fluorescent red, it would be too obnoxious to wear. the navy blue helps tone down the effects of the red.
Though I was never able to create my own iconic graffiti insignia, I was happy with where the project went. Graffiti was a temporary interest of mine, but I'm hoping that designing stays with me beyond the third and fourth quarter. For the fourth quarter I plan on expanding my design and items in the collection that I have created.

Advance Art Q3

Posted by Tamatha Lancaster in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 11:23 am

Self-Small Portrait

When I first found out that we had to draw a self-portrait, I was nervous and shocked because that’s my main weakness and I don’t draw people a lot. I cannot draw people for anything especially myself because it’s something about it that I cannot get. When I did it though, it was hard but it wasn’t as hard that I thought it was going to be.

The way I started it was first, I found an angle that I was going to draw myself, and then, I started with the shape of my head. After that, I drew my eyes, nose, and mouth, and then did my hair. The last thing I did was draw in where my earrings would go and my neck.

The hardest part of this assignment was drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth because the eyes weren’t looking like mine and they weren’t realistic. The nose was okay but it was hard trying to get it the right size and to get it straight. The lips were also hard to get it to the right size and it was difficult getting the lips in the right part. The main difficulty with these features was lining them up right.

Color Wheel

I was excited when I found out that we had to a color wheel as an assignment because I love mixing colors and you could make your color wheel any kind of way. There wasn’t a specific way you had to do it; you were free to be creative with your color wheel. Also making a color wheel was easy to make because all you had to do was make different colors out of the primary colors.

I first choose the way I was going to do my color wheel, which was the basic circle, and then I drew the circle and split the circle into 12 parts. Second, I choose my paint and colored in the parts where the primary colors where suppose to go. After that, I mixed the colors and painted the rest of the parts.

The hardest part of the assignment was dividing the circle into 12 even pieces. No matter how many times that I tried to divide it, it wasn’t coming out straight.

Texture

I was confused when I first out that we had to do texture because I didn’t know what it meant. The only type of texture I knew is how something felt so I didn’t know how to draw texture. After the assignment have been explained I understood it more and thought that it was going to be easy.

When I did the snake first I, drew the outline of the body, then I marked with the head is on the snake and drew the scales and eye on the head. After that, I drew horizontal lines on the body of the snake then drew vertical line on certain areas of the snake that intersect the horizontal lines making the body of the snake look something like bricks. Finally I drew the scales and shaded some part of the bottom of the snake. The way I drew the hair is by first drawing the head and then the hair. Afterwards, I shaded in the dark and light parts of the hair. Finally, when I drew the water, first I drew the swan and then drew curve lines in front of the swan to make look like the water is moving. Next, I drew waves throughout the paper and smudged the pencil in a little to make it more realistic.

2 Point Perspective

I have never heard of two-point perspective until it was assigned to me. When I heard it, I thought that it was going to be hard because I didn’t know how to draw in two-point perspective. After looking at the assignment and how to do it, I saw that it was going to be easy.

The way I did the first picture (22nd & Arch) it that first I looked at how it was suppose to look, then I drew my horizon line and vanishing point. After that, I drew the buildings, street, and sidewalk. Then I put in the little details that I saw and did some shading where it was needed. For the second picture, first I drew my horizon line and vanishing points at the end of the line. Then, I spaced off where each letter in my nickname will be. After that I drew the letters and shaded the inside of the letters.

The hardest part of this assignment, would be trying to get the lines in the right places and at the right direction. This was hard for me because the lines would look really different then what it was suppose to be.

Shade

To me shading is easy and simple to me, so when I heard that we had to do an assignment that had something to do with shading, I was okay with it. When drawing something, I feel as though shading comes with the package because to make it more realistic, you would shade certain parts.

The way I started this assignment is that first I drew the square and then put in the circles where they was needed. After that, I shaded the parts that needed to be shaded by looking at the website that was given. The final thing I did was smudge in some parts to make it look right. I had to use different pencils then regular ones because the shading wouldn't come out like it was suppose to. So I used thicker pencils.

shade, 12x18" --Opted for other

Posted by Jamie Murphy in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 10:15 pm

For the project "shade" I opted to do my own pice of art work. By doing this I decided I wanted to put my efforts into something for that I would enjoy more than the shading exercise. So I worked with photography, because that is an area of artwork where I find myself the most interested.  Here I took photographs of the sunset slowly changing while in a car diving. The colors in the sky change different shades while giving it a very pretty setting. I took these photos using my Cannon eos camera with a typical shooting lens. I love taking scenic pictures with this type of camera quality. While, this camera I used was my medium for this project.

color wheel, 18x18”

Posted by Jamie Murphy in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 10:14 pm

This assignment was to create our own color wheel while only using the primary colors. I used water color paints as my medium to create my color wheel. I thought this project was going to be more difficult than it turned out to be. The only difficulties I came across, was getting the colors to the shade I wanted. It was hard to figure out which colors to add to which and how much to get the outcome wanted.

texture, 8.5x11”each (3)

Posted by Jamie Murphy in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 10:11 pm

I found this project to be very accomplishing. Throughout my drawings of different texture, I used the same medium. The medium I used was a pencil, because I feel the most comfortable when using them. I have more control of how dark or light I want to shade something because I use them so often. So I get my best results when using pencil. In this assignment I was to draw three different textures which were, water, hair, and scales. Below I have my texture drawings. Water, I found to be the most difficult to represent since it is more of a clear texture than any other. So I decided to draw in the setting of a body of water with a light reflecting into it, to show the difference in the water texture. When drawing the hair, I used a picture of myself because I already know the actual texture of my hair and how it's shaped. For my last drawing of texture I drew the side view of a scaled fish. This was the texture I found the easiest to draw and also the most fun. I enjoyed this assignment and also had some new drawing experiences.
