Art Project Quarter 4: Photography

Posted by Dalena Bui in Advanced Art - Hull on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Dalena Bui Photography

For this quarter I decided to choose to do my own project involving photography. Last quarter is when I choose to do photography. I was a bit rusty at first now I am more comfortable finding or taking pictures and editing them with photoshop. This whole process made me way more comfortable with photoshop and being able to edit pictures like the way I want and everybody else to see it. i am able to photoshop in a snap and not think twice about it and I really enjoy that feeling. My pictures have become sharper and cleaner and more precise.

Process...

For this quarter I decided to put down my camera for two reasons. One because I was to busy to go out and take pictures and second I have been on Tumblr a lot and I saw a lot of pictures I could edit. I am a Tumblr user and I loved the different pictures I seen on there and how people could capture such a beautiful moment. But I always saw something was missing in the picture and it could be better. Then I thought if I could take those pictures and make them… prettier? Then I decided that would be my project this quarter of taking art and making it better and most importantly my own. I really liked what I did because I am so much more comfortable with photoshop and making the pictures the way I want it to look.

Closing Out The Quarter...

Overall this whole year has been awesome. I let myself get creative and be myself in a artistic way I never thought I could. I tackled photography which I never thought I could do before.I got to do something I really enjoyed but never did because I didn't think I was good enough. Because of art I started to see things in a new perspective. I would like to thank Ms. Hull for letting medo this project and giving me the chance to try something new. I ended this last quarter strong. Hope you enjoy.

Q3 Art Work

Posted by Victoria Odom in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 2:27 am

This Q3 I didn't follow a lot of the assignments given but I did do work. This first picture Is a picture of me when I was younger and I first editted it on the computer and then used another resource to add extra graphics to it. I like my photo edits for this picture it gives it a vintage feel with a war effect.

This assign met I had to draw a picture of myself. We used mirrors in class to look at ourself while we drew the picture my indeed it was a challenge. I drew the picture picture from a side view because it would be a little easier. Drawing pictures of yourself is a little hard because you do't really know how to draw yourself as you see yourself. It is much easier to draw other people.

I this picture I drew a sunset with pastel. One day in art I wasn't really feeling the assignment given so I started to shaded colors together and before I knew it I had a sunset. I first started using shades of yellow and orange and drew a half circle in yellow, the shaded orange around it. Then I used shades of blue and green for water. Together this formed a warm sunset.
I this assignment we had to shade objects and I shaded an object I drew myself that I saw in my mind. So there are a series of rectangles around each other and I as I drew the shapes I began to shade. At first the shade was hard because you had to go from a hard shade to a soft shade ad sometime it was difficult to transition but as I did more It got much easier.

As i did the self portrait of myself i realized there was more to me than i thought. The details and edits were very interesting, they was a little difficult though. i learned how to actually try and master my drawings not because i draw bad but because its the dedication and effort that counts the most. The features and edits were fairly easy to learn about but hard to do, i did my best on the picture though and came up with a picture i like.

ADVART: Q3 - Dakota Foster

Posted by Dakota Foster in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 11:54 pm

Here I have:

Color Wheel

Texture

Shade

Self Portrait

Color Wheel

For the Color Wheel, I only was able to use yellow, blue and red. They are the primary colors, when mixed and matched they are able to make any secondary color. I wanted to keep my Color Wheel simply and classic. I was inspired by the one in our art textbooks and I went off of that one. I drew a circle and separated it into 12 sections. Each section had the color it was going to be. The paper I used wasn't that good though because it started to fold in on itself and everything like it. My technique for doing the watercolors and getting them to blend was to water down the base coat for the paint. Then, I would paint it over with the color need to be mixed and then the colors would bend easily.

Texture

For Texture, I did scales, water, and hair.
Scales
I based it off of the video that Ms. Hull gave us and tried to make it close to that. First, I made the outline of the snake. Next, I drew the eye in the middle of the head and drew the tongue. The head of the snake is full of diamonds of different sizes. Then, I drew a gride on the rest of the body. In every square, I drew an oval shape to make it look like scale. I would say that it came out well.

Water

I had a really hard time trying to figure out what I wanted to do for water. I was doing many different types of water: still water, moving water, and water hitting rocks. None of them came out as nice as I would have wanted to them too. So, I decided to do waves. I saw a picture of them and thought I could make them look great. First, I drew the biggest wave and then drew the smaller waves under it. I made sure the curl of the waves overlap each other. Then, I drew lines inside the waves so, it would look like the water is moving in all direction. Also, the viewer's eye could follow the lines and know which way the water is going.

Hair

I repeat, I repeat Hair was the hardest texture for me. I don't know why but it just was. I couldn't get it down. I tried short hair, long hair, medium hair, curly hair, and bone straight hair. But, the pictures never looked right. So, I just put up the one that I thought was the best. I drew the outline of the face first and then, I drew the hair around the girl's head. I made it so that one side of the head was bald because I think those type of hairstyles' are bold.

Shade

For this part I did, Exercises 1, 2, 3, and 4. I think these show that I need more help with shading. First, I was pretty certain that I was using the wrong type of pencil - the grade. But, I tried anyway. The exercise weren't as easy as I thought they would be. I was trying to blend the pencil together, but that didn't work either. I didn't know what I was doing wrong but, I knew that I was doing something wrong. For my technique, I would start with a coat all over the page with a white part left over. Then, I would go over the part that would be the darkest part and blend that in with my fingers. I would keep doing that all over the parts after that, but I would go lighter and lighter as I went down the photo.

Self Portrait

I don't really know what I have to say about this photo. I would say that I did my best. This was the hardest for me out of all the drawings. I didn't want to make myself look ugly because I would be embarrassed. I tried to separate everything equally with the lines of the page. I think my face was too big in the picture compared to my body, my face stood out more in the picture. I wanted to make everything portionable and realistic.

Shade, 12x18” each (4)

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10:27 pm

Shading was fun and easy. We learned shading before, so I could do it very easily. I found that shading was most relaxing and not as stressful. I tried to have fun. I followed the guidelines, from a website Mr. hull gave us. I picked the four I liked the most, shading was interesting because I use shading for almost every picture.

Quarter 3_Artist Statement

Posted by Katherine Hunt in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Below are all my drawing and artist statements for each one:

Point Perspective-
100MEDIA95IMAG0513
100MEDIA95IMAG0513
Creating this assignment began by making sure that I knew where my foreground, background, and vanishing points coexisted. Once I did that this entitled me to be able to create the scenery through a school building. I added specific details such as lockers as well to add to the display. Through out this project it was challenging to create the different objects so that the correspond with the lines and seem three dimensional.
Hair/Texture-
100MEDIA95IMAG0512
100MEDIA95IMAG0512
For hair and texture not only did I focus on texture aspects, but features for people as we'll. While doing this the only material that I used was a pencil. I noticed that when doing hair the features of the face and details were very determining as to how it would look. Another reason that I focus on both aspects is because it helped me create more skills. Making hair in general consisted of detailed line strokes. Overall this topic is something that I am open to getting better at in terms of my technique.
Large Self Portrait
100MEDIA95IMAG0508
100MEDIA95IMAG0508
Within this picture, is just a large blown up view of my smaller self portrait. I decide to draw from the same picture of myself. This was all in attempts to conquer and capture important details. I felt as if the arms could face had more structure and detail to it. Although my main focus was to work on facial details and becoming more precise with shapes. In the future I would work on the arm details more and possibly add more shading.
Small Self Portrait-
100MEDIA95IMAG0507
100MEDIA95IMAG0507
When drawing myself, it was a very difficult assignment. In fact it didn't even seem like it was a portrait of myself. I still don't feel like this picture does either. Self portraits take a lot of practice, so I am not discouraged. The details and shapes are noted to be some of the most important parts of creating these ties of images. I noticed that the hair in this picture did look a like to the was my hair was in the original picture.
Texture Water-
Screen Shot 2012-04-13 at 11.54.19 PM
Screen Shot 2012-04-13 at 11.54.19 PM
Drawing this was pretty difficult. The shading made it hard to capture in terms of making it 3d. The water popped out after I figured it out so that I could find the water within the paper. After erasing after a while it became easier to create water, since it is clear. When doing this the water image then appeared making me content with what I had.
Shading-

Shading was difficult. In order to capture the correct amount of color and scales to it is what made this so intense. In the beginning this is what stood out to me. After erasing some of the shades it looked more like the image that I was trying to portray.
Scales-

Making this fish was actually very entertaining. It didn't consist of doing much, but making the shapes and scales. The scales seemed difficult to draw at first when starting off from the end, but afterwards they just got easier to depict throughout the drawing. I feel like my drawing looks exactly like the one shown in the example as well. The only materials that I used for this specific assignment was a pencil. I oddly noticed that this assignment had no shading to it, but just consisted of shapes.

Journal-

1. Projects I have completed:

  • Self Portrait small
  • Self portrait large
  • texture
  • 2 point perspective
  • shade
2. I can't because you made your submission form for 9:15 instead of 11:59 p.m.

3. I did not complete the color wheel.

4. During this quarter I slacked off a bit. My work ethics consisted of just looking at the work and how I could get it done. I didn't really spend as much time as I could on each item, although I wish I could have. Overall, I was pretty good with trying new things out although trying to figure out how to draw my self portrait was the most time consuming. I think that I could have worked more on other assignments. Lastly, I think that I should have made my own deadlines for this quarter.

5. Next quarter my goal is to try abstract emotion because this is very interesting because I am not great with displaying my emotions or even trying to draw emotions. Another goal for next quarter is to work hard on my observation landscape assignment because I have trouble collecting real world scenarios and putting it on paper the way it looks.

Q3 Art Journal By: Morgan Taylor

This quarter I dd only two of the projects that Ms. Hull assigned to the class, unfortunately the were both thrown out because I left them in the room on accident. The other 4 projects that were assigned I did not do because I regretfully used the class as a sort of study hall. I did benchmarks and homework when I should of been doing the artwork that was assigned. I talked to Ms. hull about what I did instead of trying to rush at the last minute to finish all of the work that I did not do. When I talked to Ms. Hull about my work ethic this quarter she explained to me how she sets us up for failure and that maybe too much freedom does not work with how I do things. One goal I have for myself this up coming quarter is to do all of my work and to have the same mind set as I did in the first quarter. I would like to get back to doing art well and having fun while doing it. I do not want to have another quarter like this, I have failed and learned. Next time I want to do a lot better.

Q3 Art Journal

For the third quarter, instead of following the curriculum Ms. Hull designed, I wanted to paint one of the ceiling tiles in her room.  I decided to paint the Flying Spaghetti Monster since I'm a devout Pastafarian and I think His noodly presence would be a welcome addition to the art room.  Most art projects are supposed to take a week, but I'm still not done this one.  I'm very proud of it so far, though.  I found the picture "Touched by His Noodly Appendage" and used Photoshop to crop out everything but the FSM Himself.  Then I added a grid to the picture so that it was divided into 24 squares, or twelve columns and twelve rows.  I divided the ceiling tile the same way, so that I could more easily make the painting well-proportioned.  After a long time sketching, I realized I had miscounted the number of rows in the painting, so my sketch was too long.  However, since I need to paint over the sketch anyway, I can amend it once the background is done.  I've never done anything like this before, so I don't know how it will turn out.  I'm excited, though.  I'm really enjoying working on this.  So far I have the whole drawing sketched out and even with the measurement mistake I think it looks quite good.  When I finish I'm going to send a picture of it to the official website of Pastafarianism.

Pictures coming soon!

Above as you can see i tried to go with a different idea of the self portrait. Instead of doing my whole face I decided to just draw half of it and then for the final product put the other half of my face in a picture with it. As you can see it didnt really turn out how i wanted but it still works. I think being to draw myself was kind of weird cause im so use to seeing my own face yet I didnt even know how to start the portrait. It was weird to look at myself and capture all the little details. Overall I liked the process just not the ending product.

For the next project I decided to practice with shading. This I found to be one of the hardest projects. Part of it being because shading has always been difficult for me. I always found it to be one of the hardest things to do when it comes to drawing. I chose to do the circles since they seemed to be the easiest. I did three different sizes to try out and learn to do different sizes all at once. In the end I liked the way the biggest one turned out so thats why i included two pictures of that one and on the middle one I made it to stand out.

For my next project I chose t go back to something I did the second quarter which was use photoshop. I picked a random picture I had on my desktop and just went crazy. For this I wanted to make the center of the feather stand out. I always found it to be the prettiest part of the picture. Its so bright yet simple. I also love the overall color of it. The shade of blue and green makes the picture go from being simple to a really eye popping picture.

For my next project i did something a little more different. I chose to not use paint or anything like that but use a thread and needle. Lately I been into eagles and I thought it would be cool to draw it and then instead of color it or paint it go over it with thick thread since normal one wouldnt really show defeating the purpose of it. At first I had to ask for help from my mom. Even though it was hard to start it out i found myself enjoying the project. Overall im really happy with the end result and i have to say this is my best project this year.

For my last project I decided to go back to photoshop. This time i chose to photo shop a picture of the track team at one of its meets. It was a picture i took by accident but it still turned out pretty to me. Even though it was a nice picture i still think that the brightest of the sun brought the picture down. This is why i made the picture a little bit more light with the red of the track so it could blend in with shadows.

Texture, 8.5x11”each (3) - water, fur/hair, scales

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Doing different textures was a lot of fun. I enjoyed drawing water the most, because I could draw my swine and be creative with the ripple and my water. Drawing scales on a snake was difficult. But I watched the video to make sure I did it right, and I was happy with how it came out. Of course the artist drew it a little better, but I did good for my first time. Drawing hair was boring but fun, because hair is difficult. You try not looking like an amateur or making it look just like lines on a circle. I drew a short cut; it could have been a little better. But overall drawing texture was an interesting experience
