​ For our last art project of the year, we had to research an assigned element from the periodic table. Next, we had to create a print that represented the element, including the atomic number and abbreviation. My element was technetium, and was number 43. After creating the 6x6 print, we were required to make a matte of a one inch border.

The project really reflected five of Science Leadership’s core values. Inquiry was used, because we needed to ask questions. Without asking, we wouldn’t know any information about our element, and therefore, we wouldn’t know what to put on our print. The information and images we used were condensed into a single or few things that represented the element. The next core value that was used is research. We needed to research a lot about our element before creating a print. You can’t do a project on something if you know nothing about it. Collaboration was used when we talked to eachother about what we can use to represent our element. I found myself asking people what they were doing, and how they were going to pull it off. I also found other people asking me about my project. Presentation will be used through this blog post, along with showing Ms. Hull our creations. The prints we created will be displayed, and people can scroll through the abundance of blog posts to see how everyone decided to represent their element. After working hard for weeks doing sketches, cutting the linoleum, and finally printing, we’re going to be using reflection on the Science Leadership Academy blog for art class. Through this blog post, everyone can see our beautiful work! It’s also a chance to talk about the experience that we had. 

Overall, I really enjoyed the project, and I think it was so much fun. In the beginning, I was sort of bored because all we were doing was sketches, but after we started actually cutting the linoleum, it was really entertaining. It was also a whole lot of fun playing with colors on the prints. I learned a lot about how to put the colors in stripes, and to make good multicolor prints with three colors.

Below is a photograph of one of the prints I did. It's temporary, and I may replace it with another print's photo, because they were on the drying rack. I used purple and red together on the one print. Unfortunately, the "43" didn't print all the way on the top left.

Inquiry - Wr had to inquire about our elements in order to do this project. We had to think about what the element is, what it does, and why it is important and valuable. We also had to inquire when we did not know how to do something, and where left to figure it out. These where healthy challenges to take, and I am so happy that I attend a school where I am not just told things, but have to experience them, and learn from what I experience wether it is good or bad.

Research - In order to make these block prints, we had to do research on our element so that we could come up with our own design.

Collaboration - We had to collaborate with others on this project in order to print our designs. We had to work with others and share the space, ink and brayers that where used to print out the designs on our linoleum block.

Presentation - In order to make our prints look professional e had to mount them. This if a form of presentation, because you are making your work look official and presentable.
Reflection - Writing about the work we have done, and relating it to the five core values of SLA (i.e. what I am doing right now) is the best way to reflect o  what we have done. I find myself being able to see how every project we do related to the core values, and that is the exact reason of SLA having core values.

Inquiry - This projected required me to think "What is my element?" and "What has my element been used in?". It also made me think about my element's history. 

Research - In order to find out the answers to the questions that I inquired I had to do some research. I found information about my atom through the use of the internet and periodic tables. 

Collaboration - I used collaboration in my project by not only using my own research but my friends ideas on what my object should be. I was able to have several ideas to choose from than just one or two because of my friends help. 

Presentation - The presentation is the actual element picture itself. I've worked hard to accomplish the look and the picture is the result. 

Reflection - This is my reflection really. Through writing this I was able to re-live my experience doing this project. 

Inquiry:

  For inquiry, I wondered about what kind of object I should print out for my element. After I chose my object, I had to think of how big I want my object to be. 

Research:

  I researched the objects that my elements make and I searched up the images to draw it. 

Collaboration:

   For collaboration, I asked my classmates which three are the best out of the five that I printed out. Also, I helped out my classmates by answering questions and helping them out in general. 

Presentation:

   I am presenting my printed objects by posting them on the slate blog of SLA. Also, I will be showing my art teacher, Mrs. Hull, my paintings.

Reflection: 

  I reflect on my process by writing out what I did. By using the five core values of SLA, I can write a reflection on my project. 

Inquiry: We had to inquire about what we would do for our element prints. We had relate the prints to things about our elements. 

Research: We had to research our elements. That way we could make prints that related to them. 

Collaboration: People help each other with the prints. They helped each other pick which prints to use. 

Presentation: We presented the prints by matting them. We also presented them by putting them on the blog. 

Reflection: Reflecting on this project, I thought about what other kinds of prints I could make. I could have done other print designs, and other colors besides just red.

In this project, SLA's five core values are demonstrated.

Inquiry is demonstrated by asking questions like, "what is this element?", "what does it do?" or "what's cool about it?" to get started.

Research is demonstrated by actually researching these questions and your element, so you could know about it, and could create a clever and interesting design for your print.

Collaboration is demonstrated by having your peers and classmates there to help you if you need it. You may not know how to do something in the project, but a classmate does, demonstrating collaboration.

Presentation is demonstrated through the final product, final presentation of your element through your print. This is how you show off, or present your element.

Reflection is demonstrated here, in this blog post, by thinking back and reflecting on what was done and the project. It is thinking about what happened, and what will be taken away from this project.

This is how the five core values are present in this project.

​ The element print required inquiry to learn about the element. Without researching the element, you would not have known what to illustrate in the stamp.
Research has to do with inquiry. It is the physical act of researching the element, to find what you can depict it with.
Collaboration was the clean up procedure. The only real collaboration was when everyone had to clean the work areas.
Presentation was the production of the prints. They are created for people to see, and present themselves without the need of words.
This is a reflection. You look back on what you did in the project, and how you learned from it.
