3rd Quarter Art

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 9:08 am

For our 3rd quarter art class we were given a different art project each week, consisting of projects surrounding our hands, still life,self-portraits, and an individual art piece that we chose ourselves. I feel as thought I did exceptionally well with this and was able to complete the projects in a timely manner that allowed me time to edit them and add things to them where needed, but I also feel as though I could have done better when it came to getting the pieces and parts ie. structuring and timing of the overall piece better because at times I was lazy in finishing a piece because of being tired or just getting frustrated with my picture at the time. I really like the pictures that I completed because I feel as though overall they show how I grew as a artist over the course of 3 quarters so far and from that my 4th quarter will reflect an even better artist. The different things that I completed

Johnny D, projects...

Posted by John DeSalis in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 9:01 am

Well, as you can see below, here are the projects that i have completed and had taken pictures of. All the other pieces that we were required to draw were lost in a bizarre and freak accident that was to be my Art folder.

The First picture you see, is the Still Life picture of the coke bottle which was not as difficult as drawing Samuel Kabangai, which is in the next three pictures and is not completed.

Write AT LEAST 5 sentences that describe your work and work ethic for quarter three

My work for quarter three wasn't that good. I tried but I'm not good with art so I just did what I could. My work ethic was fine though. One thing I cold have done differently was taking some things home and doing them to sped up the process. If I had done that I would've had everything done.

look at the assignments for next quarter, quarter 4 and state 2 goals you have for yourself in quarter 4.

1. Get everything done ASAP
2. Don't waist time

In the third quarter of my Art class I was assigned a different drawing every week, and, honestly, I didn't really enjoy it. It was ok, but I rather just draw in my manga every week, but here is what I drew.

The first thing I think I drew in the third quarter was my face in charcoal. It's disproportional and my eyes are girly and big but I'm just proud of the shading.

Art class_04

Then we were assigned to draw our hands from real life. This only made me self conscious of my hands and how old they look. I've been practicing hands for my manga so this was kinda easy. The first one was my hand and my wrist band on, but then I added a tattoo because, why not? The second one is a joke of some making a backwards L and misspelling Loser into Joser. Joser is a good band name, I should keep that in mind.

 Art class_05

Joser

The next assignment wanted us to draw a person in real life, so I drew my friend Natalie. I think this drawing is an insult to her appearance and I hope she doesn't sue me when I post this on a public website. I only like her hair an shading because I get those skills from drawing manga.

Art class_02

The next one is another picture of me smiling my creepy smile of mine, but I guess the bad face compensates for the cool hat. Also I look very tired in this picture and my venom undershirt poking out looks kinda cool.

Art class_03

My next picture is my first clear container, it was a plastic juice pitcher and I probably had the most difficult time with this as I am a perfectionist and I wanted it to be perfect. The picture is anything but perfect.

Art class_01

My last picture is a glass vase with a piece of non edible vegetation inside. The vase nor the non edibility stop me from eating that scrumptious piece of vegetation and draw an ok picture of the vase.

Joan Miro (Uyen Nguyen)

I chose Joan Miro's art work because his style is different, but it bring out the unique side of the artist. Joan Miro art work is passionate and really abstracted, however it is classy at the same time. I decided to use one of his painting calles "Rooster" as an inspiration because this painting is really simple but at the same time, it created an elution feeling for the viewer. My piece of work is base on this style of coloring and abstract.

One of the last painting was created by my own interest and style. This painting was just to express my feeling for nature and the spring time.

For the third quarter project, we were giving a task to draw different objects from drawing a self-portrait, hands, and still life to full life figures. Also the task was to draw from what we see onto different sizes of paper, from 8x11 to 24-36.This projects was to help us identify the sizes and shapes of the object that we exam and draw. Also it was a useful way to help us identify the positive and negative lights, along with the shading of the object. This project put us though a process of interacting from live objects to still life and so on to clear/see though items.

The most frustrated thing about this project for me was the process when we have to identify the object by viewing them as shapes and the shading of the object. It was a bit of a challenge working on different sizes of paper and drawing a clear/see though objects. I really enjoy this assignment at the end because it was not easy but it help realizes a lot more about lighting and shading.

FRIDA KAHLO

Frida Kahlo de Rivera was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán. Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 and she died on July 13, 1954. Frida Kahlo was best know for her self portraits and her paintings were loved by people because they expressed a lot of pain and passion in them. She was one of the great painters that came from Mexico and her work is celebrated every year.

Frida was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent. Frida Kahlo did not want to become a painter, she was a survivor of a diseases called polio and at the age of 18 she was seriously injured in a bus accident, it took Frida Kahlo a year to recover from the accident, she started to paint while she was recovering from her accident. Her paintings, mostly self-portraits and still life, were deliberately naïve, and filled with the colors and forms of Mexican folk art. At 22 she married the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, they were married for 20 years.Their stormy, passionate relationship survived infidelities, the pressures of careers, divorce, remarriage, Frida's bi-sexual affairs, her poor health and her inability to have children. Frida once said:"I suffered two grave accidents in my life…One in which a streetcar knocked me down and the other was Diego." Frida Kahlo has many famous paintings and most of those of here famous paintings were the self portraits that expressed all the pain that she went through in her life time.

During her lifetime, Frida created some 200 paintings, drawings and sketches related to her experiences in life, physical and emotional pain and her turbulent relationship with Diego. She produced 143 paintings, 55 of which are self-portraits. When asked why she painted so many self-portraits, Frida replied: "Because I am so often alone....because I am the subject I know best." Today, more than half a century after her death, her paintings fetch more money than any other female artist. A visit to the Museo Frida Kahlo is like taking a step back in time.

Aaron Johnson Quarter 3 Artist Statement

Posted by Aaron Johnson in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 1:35 pm

For the third quarter, my art class was given one project per week. While timing was difficult because we only had two class periods to work on a single project, it was an enjoyable experience because I learned a lot about myself as an artist. One of our early projects in the third quarter was to look at a plastic water bottle and try to re-create it on paper. I used a VOSS bottle as my inspiration and was able to create something that I am proud of. Other notable assignments were a self-portrait, drawing of a hand, and a full body drawing. Another assignment was to draw something that was clear. I chose to draw an empty soap bottle dispenser and was able to capture the curves of the bottle and its overall size and shape on the paper.

Natalie's Artist Statement Q3

Q3 artist statement

This quarter in our Art two class, our main focus was working with pencil and charcoal. We were assigned to draw a series of pieces, using these sketching tools during the course of thus unit. Though some of the students in the class found this entertaining and easy, most of us found it ridiculously difficult to capture our model objects in a real light.

The most difficult part of this quarter for me was learning how to draw and shade correctly with charcoal, especially when I had to create a charcoal self-portrait. The first self portrait that I created was completely unrealistic and proportionally inaccurate as my head was too small, my eyes came out too little, mu mouth too tiny, and my nose too narrow. I drew everything too robotically and consequently, and ended up with a portrait that did not resemble me at all. On top of this, I had to use charcoal to draw this piece, and since I am usually not good at using charcoal, this process was made more challenging. In the end, however, I tried drawing this portrait again and letting go a little. I drew exactly what I saw and tried to be realistic when scaling the proportions of my nose, mouth, eyes, and face. The end result came out much neater and much more accurate than the first portrait that I attempted to draw.

The best part in this quarter for me was drawing my large glass charcoal still life because it was the first time I dared to use colored charcoal. I was inspired to use colored charcoal after looking at one of Emma Hoeinstein’s art pieces. It was a still life of a water bottle and it looked extremely real because of the different colors that Emma incorporated into the piece. In my drawing I used blue for the light reflected on the vase, pink and dark pink for the ribbon on the vase and the shadows cast on said ribbon, brown and green for the leaf that was placed inside the vase, and brown for the wooden table.

At the end of the quarter, the class still had a little time to finish one more project, so I decided to make a presentation about the surrealist artist, Frida Kahlo and her artwork. This project was very fun for me because I was able to find out more about an artist that I admire very much.  Through this project, I learned that Frida Kahlo lived a very painful life, and that, in every one of her art pieces, she incorporated a personal message. She would usually depict the pain she had to endure in a certain time of her life through her art pieces. I presented this information on a keynote.

All in all, this quarter was very productive for me. I was able to get all of the art pieces done on time and was satisfied with each and every one of them. I was also able to learn more about an artist I had only heard about briefly. There were times during this quarter where my talent was being pushed to its full extent. I felt very overwhelmed and frustrated during this process because I thought that I was not going to be able to complete what I was being asked to complete. In the end, however, I was able to develop new skills.  I was satisfied with all of my final products.
